What made me really want to go to Russia was the novel Anna Karinina. Just hearing Tolstoy describe the country and the customs was very tempting to me. Most of my favourite novels are Russian and I like the fact that the country is so large and you can hop on a train and step back in time. The people were great, the girls were hot, I liked the culture- it was something that I, as an American, could relate too. I lived in china for a year and thought that the two cultures were night and day. But the people of Russia and American actually have a lot in common.

Cant decide about Uni, St Petes is a beautiful city, but its gonna get SOO cold. Not sure I can handle those Russian winters Ive read about. PLus Moscow just seems more... Russian to me.

Oh come on! If I survived the Russian winters so can you! The hot girls will distract you from the cold... I've been to both Moscow and St. Petersburg many times since my family moved, and I have always preferred St. Petersburg. I am biased since I was born there . Moscow is also very nice, I mean it has the Red Square, but St. Petersburg retains that old world feeling whereas Moscow seems a little too New Yorkish to me. Do you know what I mean? St. Petersburg has that architecture that I find absolutely amazing, it really is like traveling back in time. And like ~the_one~ said, it has the Hermitage!

Hello Russians!! My name is Nic and Im an american, but I have travelled all over and I can honestly say that Russia is my favorite country. I love the Russian authors and even dropped out of Uni to live in work in Russia for a few months. I have taken a year of Russian at uni, but I cant remember where the keys are on my keyboard.... it would take me forever to type something.

I plan on attending Uni in either St Petes or Moscow next fall (2006) any reccomendations? Moscow is supposed to be a better Uni, but St Petes is one of the oldest in Russia....

Moscow would probably have more people who are connected to the government and generally aware of what's going on in the world and not just in academia. Plus I would imagine all the bureaucrats who can't afford to send their children to London or Paris sent them to Moscow, and would make sure that Moscow gets more in the way of funding. If you're going for a study abroad though, it shouldn't really matter.

Privet!! I'm not Russian but am about to study it and Serbian and Croatian at Uni! I have lived and travelled in Russia for a few months and love it.

I have SO many good friends there and try and go out 3 or 4 times a year.

St Petersburg seems "more" Russian to me (I agree Moscow seems very "western" and New Yorkish compared) and it truely is a beautiful city - go to that uni - I have several friends there and they've nothing but good things to say about quality of teaching etc.

You'll get used to the cold!! Vodka helps hehe!!

Haha... yeah I know what you mean. My parents always make me speak Russian when I am at home so I don't forget it. Occasionally I'll forget how to say a particular word in Russian so I'll use the English version; my friends get a really big kick out of it. There I am speaking on the phone and all you hear is "russian russian russian russian TABLE russian russian russian..." Cracks them up every time.

Kovalchuk from where? Don't know him... Yep there is a town called Omsk, its quite far from Tomsk though... Not as far as Moscow of course.
You study in LSE? Impressive. Almost a dream for me. After Cambridge and Bath
So you are not actually Russian, but lived in Tula for a year? How come?
We study Bismarck in history at the moment :p: Is he your hero or something?

I was born in Belarus and my father was in the Soviet air force (we moved a lot). The Shetland flag is there just for decoration.

So when did you move to England? Do you go back to Tomsk for vacations?

He was the greatest at the subject I'm studying in the last 350 years.

Hmm, difficult to explain, mostly the attitudes of the people. For instance, if you were to lock up a bunch of people of different nationalities in the same room (assuming everyone could communicate) the Russian and the American would probably hit it off.

Both Russians and Americas were somewhat nationlistic, both had pride for their countries, but both could easily list countless faults. Both generally distrust political leaders. Both into sports such as football and basketball, both into drinking and having fun. Both Russian and American traditional culture (such as movies, music, etc.. ) are pretty similiar. Both consider their country to be a world leader and although Russia has slipped a bit, both realize the importance their countries have played in a global sense.

In China, Chinese people are .. pretty much all brainwashed. They refuse to admit that China has even a single fault. They refer to the Tianamen Massacre as a 'sweeping victory against the counter revolutionaries' they want to anhialate Taiwan, they think everyone is plotting against China. Chinese people are very racist- they are completely open about it. They talk about how they hate Japan, and how they hate Taiwan, and how they cant possibly understand why Tibetans ressent them, seeing as thier lives are so much better now that China conquered them. They are into ping pong and badmitton, they mostly dont drink, they are completely obssesive about 'losing face' (looking bad). They are relativley shy and dont open up too much.

Ive travelled to and spent a decent amount of time in dozens of countries and I honestly feel that Americans and Russians are very very similair.

Does this help at all? By the way, I actually liked China a lot and made many good friends there, dont want to appear that I was going off on them. But what I said is true. The sad thing is that it is almost universal for people who actually live in China and have not had a chance to make it out.

Maybe in your opinion, China is a country and Taiwan is another one. But I will tell you Taiwanese are Chinese, too! Chinese on the Mainland love Chinese on the island of Taiwan. Whether Taiwan is seperated or not is not only related to a united PRC, also related to the Chinese Civilization's continuing and advancing. As Chinese, we won't let our fellowmen be seperated from us. No matter how much and how hard the international and domestic difficulties are. Chinese will strive after a united China!

If you don't take it into consideration that why Chinese hate Japan, please know how many Chinese were slaughtered by Japanese! Chinese don't hate all the Japanese. We only hate men who take militarism as a brief and take agressions for granted! Chinese hate them, also because lots of Japanese want to juggle the truth of history and always hold a memorial ceremony for the war criminals in The Second World War!
Certainly, we are happy to see that many Japanese dare say the truth, can apologize and be willing to be friends with Chinese. We appreciate them! We are willing to make friends with them.
As to the evolution of China and Japan, all the people who love peace hope the friendship between China and Japan can reach a new level.

As you criticize Chinese government for the Tananmen Affair, you should know the truth about it. If the Tianamen Affair is only a Student Movement, the government wouldn't order the Army to control the situation. There's a polt to overthrow the Government of People! It's a coup, not a demonstration!
As a political affair, there are many people, especially many college students, were attacked much harder than they should. We are sorry for that, but if the government didn't do that, what we have now are not sorriness but also the ruin of our country. Thus, the only laugh is left for the rebels and the guys who hate socialism.

In my opinion, all the people in any country, having any colors, being any race, are great and respectable! Russians and Americans both have helped us. Chinese people won't forget the Russian heros who guided us to a bright way and the American heros died in the air above Himalaya.
Chinese people love peace and all the people who love it!

But the government of China didn't slaughter peolop. In fact, the beginning of the movement was only a student movement. The purpose of it was to prevent the corruption of some officers. But unfortunately, the political situation became rough-and-tumble. Thus, some careermen, who wanted to be dictators, and the men, who wanted the situation of China to be a chaos, use this "opportunity" for them to make the coup. If the coup succeeded, no benifit would be taken to Chinese people, but the regradation and the more serious chaos.
I think a Chinese knows the history of China more clearly. And the some truths weren't the things you know or imagin.
If you know the exact history of China and the world, you will find many things of China didn't seem to be as bad as you thought, but more better.
