If you have a teaching qualification then the "going rate" depends on
your experience as a teacher and may depend on your ability to "jump
through hoops" for performance related pay. The rates are available on
the website of your union. Performance Management was introduced on the
assumption that teaching is a really easy job and teachers are not under
enough stress. Mr Blunkett of blessed memory refused to give teachers
"something for nothing." "Nothing" was Mr Blunkett's analysis of what
teachers are doing. So why are they stressed and cynical...see if you
can work it out

Stressed? Stressed? WHO SAID THAT? Dunno what its like to be a teacher
Ronnie, I gave it up because of all the bloody Ofsted inspections; the
new initiatives and the SM inspections. It happened to me so often in
the last few years before I retired that I used to feel lonely when I
was in the classroom by myself. (just me and the kids).
Then there's the NC, would you believe, they re-wrote my bit of the N.C.
about three or four times? the first one had something about MIDI's in
it... now its so vague you could have a philosophical discussion on what
they mean by "Has a knowledge of..." which seems to appear all over the
place (jobs for the boys I think).
Then the "Ideographic" approach towards report writing. Y'know instead
of.... "Could do better" we had to write a detailed description of every
single skill a child had gained. .."Johnny has gained the ability to
draw two straight lines with a pencil and can use a ruler to measure
....etc., Try saying that to a parent on parents' evening it would take
you an hour just to read the report and at the end the they would say
something like, "Yes, but how is he doing in class?"
It got so detailed they've developed software to pick it out from an OMR
and write a five page report that nobody reads anyway, 'part from the
SMT who just look for errors. Then they complain that the reports are
computer generated and bland... no surprise there. Well they'll probably
develop some software to 'read' the reports and then churn out a
synopsis. It'll probably say, "Johnny could do better."
Then there's all the extra bits they ask teachers to do. They're
beginning to realize that teachers have very little time to relax and
smell the roses. In fact in this area they've started an initiative
where someone goes around to schools and gives lectures on how to gain
some 'special time' to rooms full of stressed out teachers.(jobs for
the boys?)
Call me an old cynic if you like but I bet at least one of those
teachers forced to attend the lectures on how to relax and find some
time for themselves would rather have been finding some time for
themselves and not attending a lecture on how to do it.
So, considering one or two of the points above from 'Baker Days' when
they pay someone to come and state the obvious to a room full of cold
teachers sitting on hard little chairs who have had to pay for a child
minder to the Ofsted Inspections when the mood of one child can colour
the inspectors view of your ability and you have to live with the
results for five years (that happened to someone I know) my heart goes
out to the teachers that are still out there. All I can say to them is,
"I still have the rope and the map of the tunnels folks." Happy New
