What are my chances of getting B or a C in AS Maths?

Well i'm in year 11 and i've achieved my A* in Maths early but the thing is that I really wanted to start my AS but my teachers were just too lazy. I've managed to get something started with another teacher who's part of the senior management team (he specialises in physics really). Well he's agreed to help me and he'll be giving me one to one classes for C1. Do you think i'll be able to get a B or a C by May bearing in mind that i'm about a third/half of my way through the C1 syllabus.

Lol, I'm in the same position as you. Doing my Core 1 in May -.-". My team has been off for 3 weeks now and we've covered 20 pages out of the 100+ odd pages.

Oh yeah I also got an A* early, it shouldn't be too hard getting a B because most of it is similar to GCSE or it's built up on your GCSE Maths .

Hopefully... I can scrap an A. :/ I really don't want to retake it... -.-"

I know it would be amazing if I could possibly get an A.

EDIT: Hang on a moment, YOU HAVE A TEAM!!

Just do a tonne of past papers to make sure you get the grade you want. An A at c1 is easy so you may end up getting an A if you work hard at it. But you should focus on your Gcse's.

We did C1 in a few weeks in year 11...much less time than you have now :p: you should do fine :yep: and either way doing some now should help give you a bit of breathing space next year, even if you have to retake.
Plus physics teachers make excellent math teachers from my experience :dontknow:

I meant teacher
Erm, it's unlikely tbh.

An AS is assessed out of 300 UMS points (at least a 3 Module AS like Maths is). If you're only half way through C1 with 10 weeks left before the exam (or something like that) I really doubt you're going to have time to cover C2 and S1/M1/D1 to a good enough grade to get a B or even a C, since you'll need approximately 200 UMS to get a C. If you can storm through C1, which should be easy since it's essentially just Higher GCSE maths with Calculus thrown in, ace that (90%+), you could maybe then cover C2 and S1/M1/D1 to C level, but C2 is where A Level maths actually starts, and S1/M1 have a lot of content.

Ask yourself if there is any actual benefit to doing it a year early. If you end up doing Maths A Level (either Further or Regular) all you've really done is cover it a year early. I personally wouldn't be happy with anything less than a B in an A Level, so you're selling yourself short by going away with a C at AS. If you don't plan on doing Maths at A Level, you may have an AS under your belt, but it'll count for very little in the long run.

I think he's only doing C1 in May? So he should be fine
Well that's not really AS Maths is it?

That's 1/3 of it. Even less point of doing it if you have to do it again next year anyway, and if it doesn't count for anything. Sure, if you love Maths, you may want to start early, but I didn't even really start enjoying A Level Maths until C3.

It's she mate lol. Sorry I feel a bit weird when people get my gender wrong so I correct them. Oh and yeah it's only C1 that i'm doing early.

Yeah it's only C1 that i'll be doing but my school have just put the people who achieved the As and A*s into the library for the meantime and we're supposed to catch up on other coursework or just improve on other subjects. I find it hard to concentrate properly at school and the pupils that are in the library with me aren't always quiet. What do you suggest I do...shall I just do the AS as I go along and just brush up on my GCSE's as well?

I was in a similiar situation to you. Got an A* at GCSE Maths in Y10. I didn't have the option to do any AS Maths, but even if I did, I wouldn't have. If you really want to get ahead, do either the Statistics GCSE (if you're going to be doing Maths + Stats or Further Maths) - it'll help a LOT with S1 since, in Maths terms, S1 is just remembering formulas, or do what I did - learn stuff that will be on the A Level course, but not particularly for an exam. I taught myself Calculus, Trigonometry and Logarithms up to C3 level, and it definitely a) Gave me a better insight into what A Level maths really is about, and b) Took pressure off me since I knew I was essentially done for a year with mandatory Maths.

I actually ended up not doing A Level Maths my first year at college due to missing Year 11 (long story - but I want to be a Doctor and my best chance at that point was doing the 'easy' A Levels and then doing a foundation course). Once I realised I wanted to actually get a firm grasp of the Sciences before doing Medicine, I took Chemistry, Bio and F. Maths. Maths is by far now my favourite subject, to the point where I was close to applying for Maths instead at University (and still might at some point).

TL;DR - If you really enjoy Maths and want to get ahead, doing C1 isn't the way. You aren't really going to learn anything new, and it won't count for anything. Concentrate on your GCSE's, and make sure you do as well as possible. Summer is overlooked as an awesome time to get your foot in the door, A Level wise. Wait till then if you're truly keen on it.

Ok well I think i'll learn the entire AS modules but it's too late to start the statistics GCSE and plus i'm learning the D1 instead - I find it more interesting. Thanks for the advice.
