    Manually Replacing PS3 Bluray Laser
Okay, so my PS3s bluray laser bit the dust and I was told by Sony that I would have to pay £130 for them to fix their own manufacturing deficiency. Of course I said **** that and have since been using my 360 as my primary console, problem is though, Heavy Rain is out and GOW3 is out next month so I really need to get my PS3 back up and running. I was thinking of purchasing a laser from ebay and doing it myself but I just wanted some tips/experiences if anyone else on here has done this and whether they know anywhere cheaper than the £40 or so that ebay is selling it for. I'm pretty hands on and doubt I would have much trouble dismantling and putting it all back together so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how long the process took and whether my torque and siemens screwdrivers would be enough to do the job.

I presume your on about the original 'phat' PS3. Are you looking to buy an entire drive? Or a cradle? Or perhaps just a laser?

Ouch. Um no I wouldn't recommend. Are you sure your warranty is out?

It's definitely doable, I replaced PS2 parts before, wouldn't dare try my PS3 though.

But yes your tools would most likely be ok.

No, why did you tell me NAO!!!

    Arrrrrggh!!!!!

Seriously though I'm not even gonna bother, thousands of people have tried convincing Sony its their fault but they would never budge. A shop would also charge about £90, worse comes to worse and I **** up I'll just give it to sony to do anyway, I bought my console on launch so its waaaay out of warranty.

    ????

I dont think the PS3 is any more complex than the PS2, though I am aware that the PS2s DRE issue was far easier to rectify.

No the PS3 is more complex. Maybe not on the eye. But blu-ray is significantly more delicate and being good with your hands is a bit different than being skilled enough to disassemble and replace components on a fairly advanced bit of technology.

Perhaps, but I just refuse to pay sony £130, dont really care if they're giving me a refurbished console or not.

True, but I feel the 360 has been getting worse and worse as the generation draws on, the only thing I'm looking forward to on it is Halo Reach but that doesnt come out till the end of the year. I tend to avoid multiplatforms, except for FF13 which I will also be playing on the PS3. I dont have live and GOW3, Heavy Rain, and GT5 all need my love

This is what we call a BAD IDEA.

Disc-reading lasers will blind you if they shine on your retina. Enjoy!

I am just going for GOW3 maybe GT5 depends how good it is.

I agree 360 doesn't really have any special games yet. Except Mass Effect games love them!!!

My dad did this to our PS3 whilst I was away.
Apparently the laser (+assembly) cost about £40 and was took about ten minutes to replace There're some pretty good videos on youtube which show exactly how to do it.

Never done a PS3, but I dismantle my electronics for no reason all the time and have never had a problem, just be slow and steady, you hit a problem walk away, go back to it in 30 mins amazing how doing that can make you suddenly see what you did wrong.
