Can't help too much but just wanted to say that I've applied for JB as well - the en suite toilet and self catering factor swung it for me

Hopefully some kind soul will offer some good information

Exactly.........the only thing I'll be cooking will be pasta or stir fries....but at least I know I'll be able to eat them at 3am!

Yay!
More people applying for Butler

There really doesn't seem to be many people that actually want to go to JB

I think Butler's a love-hate thing to be honest.

You should be aware that the lack of community meals can make some people feel quite isolated (especially if they're in a duff flat), and the college is open about the fact that there are problems with this. They're recruiting a sabbatical officer next year to try to address this though - they're not just sitting around twiddling their thumbs waiting for things to sort themselves out.

Are you at Butler yourself? Thanks for the insight-what do you mean by a duff flat? sorry :s-smilie: XX

Yes I know I don't know why though- I think it's the lack of formality and traditions-which I personally don't mind too much :P - what subject are you ?x

Yeah, but I'm a third year and I only lived in college in my first year.

By duff flat I mean you're stuck with people who are either incredibly irritating (really messy, noisy, boyfriends who ring the doorbell at 4am ) or you just don't click with them for whatever reason even though they're perfectly decent people. I ended up with a combination of both.

EDIT: I should add that I'm not trying to put people off JB (I know people who absolutely love it), but I think it's important that you're aware of some of its cons despite the en suite bathrooms.

Lol thanks I appreciate the heads-up-well I guess even If I didnt like it I'm sort of stuck now considering Ive got a place there- What would you recommend then? Would you say to make sure we enroll on a few decent societies both with the college and main uni so that we form some sort of community or? Is the atmosphere around nice though? Sorry for the million questions :P

Regardless of what College you are at, it's always a good idea to sign up for College and Uni level societies. Even if you end up loving life at Butler, it's nice to mingle with different people from time to time, particularly if you are always with the same clique in College.

I'd definitely recommend getting involved in societies of some description, both at college and university level. I've really enjoyed volunteering with Student Community Action whilst I've been here too. To be honest, I probably wasn't helped by the fact that I'm not really a "going out" person, so that closed off one way of socialising within college.

The atmosphere is what you make of it to be honest. I found it pretty lonely, but almost all of my friends are not in Butler so I guess I never integrated very well.

How do Formals work in Butler? I heard that they forget to build a kitchen with everyone being self-catered and that food was drafted in from a catering service external to the university. I guess that's changed with the central catering system.

I haven't been since catering was centralised, but they used to get caterers in before. The food was pretty awful to be honest, so I've only been twice :o:. Again, because most of my friends aren't in college I've never really been part of college life.

Storage is quite limited. There's room for those under-bed boxes though. My mum got me a little bedside table thing with loads of drawers that was a real help.
