Are you a law student at Leeds?

Hi guys,

So I'm currently a third year arts/law student in Australia and thinking of going on exchange in Feb 2011 - Feb 2012. It's now between Sheffield and Leeds (I've already posted a thread on the Sheffield forum about this) and was wondering if you law students could tell me much about the law school.

I'm trying to come up with a study plan, and realised that as an outsider, I don't have much access to the course guides of your electives/subjects. So any advice about particularly good/bad subjects would be appreciated! In general, I haven't enjoyed the commerce-y law subjects. Just not my thing.

Also, what's the law society like? Are there heaps of extra-curriculars to get involved in?

Cheers.
I would vouch for both, both faculties are well regarded - perhaps Sheffield slightly more so in terms of "prestige" and table rankings if that makes any ounce of a difference to you.

However, I'm not a fan of Sheffield's treament of prospective students, maybe this is different for law but this year many of my friends and myself have applied to a range of faculties and found for poor communication, very little in the way of invitations to open days etc. I could only imagine this to be somewhat escalated if you are not only out of the country but out of the EU. On the whole, I found the place very self absorbed, very internal.

Leeds on the other hand is a far more friendly place (from my experience). The vast difference between the two in my opinion is that Leeds Uni is very much tied in with the city in terms of extra-curriculars - getting you internships, charity work, jobs, societies and so on. I don't feel Sheffield come close to Leeds in this respect.

In regards to electives I would say look at some philosophy modules if you are in anyway inclined by the subject. Really nice department, friendly people who seem to always have the time for you.

Bare in mind I do not have any first hand experience of the Law departments, so I can't help with any of the nuances of each one.

I don't go to Leeds or Sheffield, but module choices are all on the websites:

http://www.leeds.ac.uk/studyabroad/incomers/modules.htm - says 60 credits per semester.
