does anyone do actuarial science?! i wanna be an actuary but im not sure whether i should do maths or act sci. can someone tell me the difference..
any help would be greatly appreciated

Actuarial Science will be much more specialised (kinda like and accountancy degree), maths is much more generalised. It's worth remembering that to qualify as an actuary you need to do a lot of exams and an AS degree only excempts you from a few of these.

I'd pretty much advise maths- if you change your mind etc. it's a much more useful (because it's very generalised and in-demand course) degree and you can pretty much do anything sciency with it

I recommend doing Maths, that way you have many more options as to what you want to do in terms of your career. You can do the finance related Maths courses such as Stochastic Calculus, this will enable you to do most (if not all) finance related courses, if it's finance rather than acturary you're interested in. (I don't really see how Stochastic Calculus could be used by Actuary's much though).

I'd never do anything but a straight Maths course.

i would think that mathematics would give you a wider range of things you can go into, because in 3years your opinions can change. And there are some accountancy and actuarial science modules that you can do are there not?

man, you people are biased !! sorry to say, I think it is not appropriate to ask if actuarial science is the right course in a mathematics subforum.

On my turn, I think actuarial science gives great emphasis on a business career. it tends to teach you business and finance syllabus. If people to prefer to take this course, they will be rather in an environment with students pursuing one interest, i.e. business career.

if you really do have a choice, and you don't prefer one over the other, then you really should go for maths - all city employers love a maths degree

probably a biased response... maths and finance at city university... very similar course to act and enables u to get just one less exemption then act (depending on the options u take etc).... however it gives u the felxibility of doing something else if u dont like it.... i thought act would be something i might get use to, i absolutely hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! glad i am doing maths and finance instead.....

Actuarial science itself is a great subject to study, if you already know what you want out of mathematics. The course is sufficiently mathematical to allow you to do anything that you could've done with a maths degree. If you look, you'll see that almost all the actuarial science options are just statistics and mathematics options. At the end of the day, i don't think it makes a big difference, actualrial science is just applied mathematics.
