Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK II
Got another lesson in about half an hour. I can finally do a hill start on the steepest hill in town so i should be ok with other hills now.
I think i just need to practice moving off on junctions and roundabouts now. I do it too slowly as for some reason i put the clutch all the way up before i put my foot on
the accelerator. -
Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK II
Need some advice: basically ive had 8 lessons [done hill starts,closed/open junctions, double junctions, dual carriageways + roundabouts etc but NO manoeuvres] and thought i was progressing quite well, except my instructor seems to have *off* days, where hes in a bad mood with me and i get stressed and make really silly mistakes! and don't feel like ive learnt anything at all in the lesson because of his *off* days and his attitude. I usually have to drive his last student home - which is acceptable as its usually a different student each time, so im experiencing different roads, but my instructor and the student would fully TALK while im driving, and he would forget to tell me where to go,what to do,so i get stressed and stall, (then he would get annoyed at me!) and the conversation between them would be so deep i honestly cant concentrate! and then i would make a mistake and there would be a joke made between him and the student im leaving home- confidence knocked completely AND he would make phone calls =/- but, he said im so "Advanced" i could pass my test by july? should i change instructors???

Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK II
Had about 6 lessons now, it's going really well. I can drive to a good level, changing gears has become second nature and i'm just generally confident in myself on the road. I'm hoping to get to doing some manouveres next lesson and i reckon i should be test worthy after about 14/15 lessons.
Clearly got negged by a **** driver who took 100 + lessons to pass their test and failed about six tests in the process. Why do people in general get so jealous? I tell people that I'm driving in 4th gear and doing junction well and instead if feeling pleased for me, they resentit as they couldn't do it. FFS, i learnt driving faster than you and there's probably many things that you're better than me at, you wouldn't see me crying about it.Last edited by theonefrombrum; 02-07-2012 at 18:52. -
Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK II
I was wondering - is it possible that some people's brains are just not wired for driving? I've had about 50 hours of lessons on and off over 3 years and have failed my test 4 times. I am constantly on edge behind the wheel and I find simple concepts like lanes, giving way and traffic lights incredibly stressful and confusing. I am begining to think my personality and thought processes just don't allow me to drive, I envy those who can just get in a car and know what to do! I'm an otherwise intelligent person, I just seem to fall to pieces when I'm driving (on my last test I almost crashed then was too scared to carry on driving, so was doing 30mph on the dual carriageway while the examiner feared for their life!)

Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK II
Just wondering if anybody could give me some advice about the gear changing.
Whenever I turn around a corner after being in gear one. The engine is usually screaming at me to move into gear two already. I'm just wondering, when do you guys usually change the gear? Right after you've turned around the corner, or just before you've turned the corner? Or during the process?
Not sure if that makes any sense. -
Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK IIYou should really turn corners in second gear. Just slow down when approaching the corner and make the gear change into second before turning.(Original post by Tombola)

Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK II
I was just wondering, i'm struggling with the biting point. I'm still stuck on trying to feel it and i know the bonnet moves up a bit but how fast can release the clutch whilst increasing the gas etc?
Just finding it a bit difficult moving off quickly. But saying all that, i havent had a look over the theory stuff yet and the highway code :/ I really should do. By the way, I've only done 2 hours of lessons so far. Booked a 2 hour session this thursday as well. Definitely a lot of fun!
Thanks. -
Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK IIYeah. Usually I'd turn corners in second gears but these are the ones where there's a traffic light just before the turn.(Original post by Jason2)

The engine just sounds horrible when I'm turning so I feel like maybe I'm meant to move into gear two already? Would you still do so? -
Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK IIAh - I usually make a quick change before turning.(Original post by Tombola)

Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK II
Just had my first lesson today, eek!
It went okay I think and I quite enjoyed it. I only made one big slip up, which was full on breaking in the middle of the road instead of using the clutch as I just got tangled with my feet
Worries me how she said i'll be driving myself home within 2 lessons

Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK II
I can't do the left reverse after so much practice! What is wrong with me!!
Any tips? It seems like I'm always too close or too wide and not very good at correcting. My spacial awareness is poor. It's so frustrating as my driving is perfect but I would fail If I got that manoeuvre. -
Re: The Learner Driver Progression Thread - MK IIhug the curb! Use the left mirror lots for guidance, and as soon as you start to go wide steer a little to the left and as soon as you start to get too close steer a little to the right. Then, all you need to do is straigten once you're round the corner and the right distance away(Original post by Mouth)
