Projects Abroad is a good one, I'm *fingers crossed* going to Nepal with them to work in a clinic a couple of hours away from Kathmandu. Someone from my school went 5 years ago and said they were brilliant, you get placed in a host family with people they've worked for years and there are always a lot of other gappers there so you're not alone. The cost pretty steep though, but will be worth it I think  I'm going for 2 months, I think it's in the region of £800-1200 + flights :/

May i reccomend this place: http://www.missionfortheruralpeople.org//index.html

Just to let you know that the website's been raped by the other volunteer who was with me but it should be back up and running soon

EDIT: IT STILL HASN'T BEEN FIXED

Who was it with/where to?
Its called the: Mission for the Rural People, India. Located just outside Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh (and by 'just outside' I mean I spent 4 days in total travelling to and from there from London ). It's an orphanage run by a Pastor and his wife (as well as an elderly home, too:wink:).

Would you recommened it?
The best 2 weeks of my life - EVERYTHING was amazing; the food, the kids, and the weather (didn't rain when I was there during monsoon season). They don't ask for money but its good to give a donation (I gave about £300), plus theres no set time for you going or staying so you can stay as long as you like (I had pre booked flights, though, so I couldn't stay for longer) but if I was staying in a hotel and doing all this (or paying a company) I'd be paying SO much more so yeah ... donate

Did you learn alot from the experience?
I became a Karrom master (Google it) and became a proficient Kabadi-ist. I learnt a load of other stuff but i'm saving that for my PS  I also taught them mad typing skills and a bit of English.

Do you think it added some weight to your medical application?
I was like: 'could you organise a medical camp with the money'. He sorted out 3. Helping ... wait for it ... 700+ people yessir :yep: So it really benefitted the community. I've got a good half paragraph on it in my PS as well.

Was it something you talked about in detail in the interview?
Not really (it sorta came up in my Bristol interview), but I only had two interviews and one had set questions (George's)

Also was it enjoyable?
HELL YEAH

How many other students went?
I was going to be there alone, but there was a Scottish girl there as well, which was good. I reckon it'd be better if you took another person with you - its nice to have someone you can have a conversation in proper English with (they're not all that fluent but you can have a half conversation with them). I can't begin to describe what a great experience it was. Seriously.

Heres the facebook group we set up: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=119614091757&ref=ts

From here

That reminds me of this one time on my Gap Yah ... :

ahh yes please! xD

Yeahh, I did one of the summer 2 week specials, there was a group of about 20 of us, but didn't stay with a host family, just in projects abroad building (presumably since it was such a short thing). It was really cool getting to see medicine in a different country too, since it was really really different to here! Talking about it is making me want to go back sooo much now! :p:

I wouldn't worry too much if you end up going alone, it is definitely worth it. I did India, but I didn't know anyone...i let them book my flights and ended up on a flight from london with about 7 others  We got in touch via facebook before we went and it was great.

I've been looking at the 2 week special projects myself. Did you take part in one of the medical work experience placements or a different project, such as care and community work. I'm struggling to decide between the two because they both sound very good. Could you tell me more about what you did whilst you were there? I'm edging towards the care and community experience at the moment...

I took part in the medical placement, it was excellent! it'll be a bit different now, since the base has moved town, and the weekend trip has changed I think, but I'll tell you a bit about what we did.

Umm we travelled on the saturday/sunday, was a really long journey so we were knackered when we got to India! There were like 8 others on my flights which was great, much less scary than travelling alone. We started on the monday, getting a talk at a hotel from a doctor, and then before we'd even started our placements, 4 of us were taken away to see surgery (this happened quite a few times in the week, outside the scheduled placements). We spent the first few days with each morning and afternoon in different specialities, for example GP, paediatrics, a government hospital, obs and gynae (this was amazing, we saw a cesarean) etc. Towards the end of the first week we spent 2 nights at a leprosy hospital, which was interesting but also shocking. Then we went to our weekend trip, culminating in an elephant ride  The first few days of the second week were back on rotations in the local hospitals, then the end was spent at an ayurvedic hospital. We had a day in Trivandrum, where we were flying from, for shopping etc at the end before coming home.
We were paired up with another volunteer for all placements, then put in sort of mini groups for moving locations (ie there were 6 of us who were always based in the same place).

Wow, this is a bit of an essay :p: feel free to pm me or something if you want to know more

projects abroad. I have friends that went last year. Said it was amazing. You can go on their website and order a brochure, and ask them to call you back on the website. They are happy to take any questions.

Guys, anyone heard much about Gap Medics? Im stuck between them and projects abroad, also if i do go with projects abroad, what country and for how long is ideal for the medical work experiance  wb plz

I'd say Gap Medics. They are the first company that actually specialises in medical work experience, which is what you really need if you want to apply for medicine. You have a supervisor at the hospital and they teach you new skills, introduce you to different areas of the hospital, give you talks and demonstrations etc. Projects Abroad is more like a regular volunteer project.
iv done 2 placements. 1 with projects abroad and 1 with gap medics. i hav to say gap medics was so much better. you get put in a real hospital and work with real doctors and i made so many friends. worth every penny
