I stayed in the Coppice, which is the self-catered area of John Foster, and it's nice, we had a nice big kitchen, warm rooms (which I heard some other people complain about) The ensuites are like little airplane capsule bathrooms though, very small, bolted into your room basically. So you have to decide whether you want the extra cash back, or whether you value the hot water and freedom to shower at ANY time you want more. I personally found it worth the money, and loved my ensuite  You get put in flats which are five rooms in a corridor. It's not the brand new round buildings though, just so you know. In my flat we just had a kitchen with a table, which wasn't the most sociable kind of setup for inviting people round, but I think most flats have a 'lounge' type room with chairs, I might be wrong....

These things vary, I think in the older buildings you sometimes get bigger rooms, but I haven't been to Bowder Court so I couldn't really say. Ultimately, I'm sure you will be happy either way, just go with what feels right

Are the brand new building catered only then or are there self catered in the new ones as well? Or is it to do with premium/premium plus?

Some of the John Foster pavilions are self catered... I think (although someone might know more) that these come under premium plus ensuite whilst the Coppice rooms with "pod" bathrooms come under premium ensuite, and the Coppice flats I'd guess are the "Premium flats". I think Bowder Court also comes under "premium ensuite", although, the bathrooms in there are bigger than the pods but smaller than John Foster pavilions...
I stayed in Bowder court . I loved it! The kitchens are huge, bigger than the Pavilions and also bigger than the kitchen I saw in the Coppice, but I've only seen one of them so it might vary, but they are less modern than the John Foster kitchens. There was plenty of space for socialising... they provided us with a table and chairs for 6 people, 6 comfy chairs and a coffee table in ours (the boys in the downstairs of our block had around 10 comfy chairs for some reason!). Then we put a sofa/Tv/hi fi in as well, and there was still loads of space. So yeh. Big.
As to which you'd prefer it's really up to you  There's not that much difference in it in my opinion... could you put one as first choice and one as second maybe? Sorry to be no help at all!

@gizabun: thanks, thats really helpful^^ just to ask, there is the option of staying in mixed gender accommodation in bowder court right?

er, I don't think any of the blocks had mixed corridors... but there are three floors in each block, and usually there's boys on one floor, girls on another and then either girls or boys on the other floor... I think when I was there, there might have been one block which was just girls but I'm not sure if they do that every year...

To reply to the question about the pavillions, I haven't met anyone who is self-catered and staying in the pavillions, I think that self-catered is restricted to the Coppice, maybe to one or two other houses around the pavillions like Spinney House, I'm not 100% certain about that but I'm pretty sure that none of the pavillions are self-catered. I found it kinda hard to interpret because on the information leaflet it says that there is self-catered available at john foster and it also mentions the ''converted buildings'' but it really doesn't explain that self-catered isn't in the pavillions, so when I applied I was sort of hoping for the pavillions, my main criteria being the more modern the better because they would stay warmer in Winter :P

So when I turned up and found out that I was at the Coppice, I felt slightly disappointed, but I needn't have, it was fine. Bowder Court sounds pretty awesome by Gizabun's description though, so maybe put that as your first choice (plus then I think you'll have less far to walk to ASDA, right? :P)

The Coppice has a couple of mixed flats, but the majority are single sex, they try and keep them seperate usually. Also, another nice thing which I found was that if you have been on a gap year, they do seem to try and take age into account or at least they did in my case, they put me with 2 second year students and 2 gap year students so that we were all roughly the same age. Which I really enjoyed, but that's just my feelings on it  xx

They do have some pavillions that are self-catered but it is only about 3 of the pavillions which are used for this catering option, often changed yearly!
