Re: Hyper Awesome mega thread for simple applicant questions!
I want to apply to Barts next year I was wondering what type of grades at GCSE you need. I do IB and I was wondering whether they go more off of UKCAT and IB predicitions than GCSE grades. I've got good but not great GCSE grades 5A's 3 A* 4 B's.

Re: Applying for medicine in 2013(Original post by rmacd)
Yes, you'll need a new account. Old login won't allow you to submit into 2013 cycle.
Registration opens around the beginning of September.
Thanks for the help. I found out it opens in June, not September
Take care -

when writing the PS, do spaces count in the overall 4k characters? -
Re: Hyper Awesome mega thread for simple applicant questions! You could write it in a massive chunk. I personally think that would look a bit odd though.(Original post by chiny94)
when writing ps, can you just not opt to space your paragraphs out? so can i write it in massive big chunck with just the indents as for the start of the paragraphs? thanks! -
Re: Hyper Awesome mega thread for simple applicant questions! You could, I know people who did that and that was initially my plan because I thought the character limit was just too tight. But once you get feedback etc you end up cutting out chunks. I'm glad I put in proper paragraphs(Original post by chiny94)

Re: Hyper Awesome mega thread for simple applicant questions!Mine was a big chunk with indents and it turned out okay but if you have spare space definitely leave those lines(Original post by chiny94)

A2 Maths: Needed or not?
I'm applying for medicine (not at oxbridge) and I was wondering whether you would be at a disadvantage if you didn't take maths onwards to A2? I took Biology, chemistry, maths and philosophy. However i'd rather go onwards without the maths...
Any opinions or people who are going to (or already had) go on without the maths at A2? -
Re: A2 Maths: Needed or not?You will be at no disadvantage whatsoever. Pick what you like(Original post by Swadd)

Re: Hyper Awesome mega thread for simple applicant questions!
A question for people who have applied for medicine and done the whole interview process:
Is it likely the interviewers will ask whether you have attended that particular uni's open day?
I might apply to Cambridge and/or UCL but their open days are fully booked (because I keep changing my mind- sigh.) I don't wanna be stumped if they ask me if I went to the open day and I'm like..."no" -

Re: Hyper Awesome mega thread for simple applicant questions!I didn't go to any open days, had 4 interviews, and I never got asked if I had attended their open day, however, make sure you're prepared to answer the 'why this university' question, because that came up in all of them!(Original post by salsharifi)

Re: Hyper Awesome mega thread for simple applicant questions!Yes. However some medical schools will use them less, it depends where you apply.(Original post by csefton3)
Hey guys,
So i didnt get into university first time round, so im sorta being forced into a gap year and hoping to apply with 3 A's. IF i do get 3 A's, would my fairly average GCSE's STILL be taken into account?

Re: Hyper Awesome mega thread for simple applicant questions!Depends on where you apply, some uni's won't care quite so much/will put emphasis on your achieved A levels, whilst other uni's will still look at at GCSEs(Original post by csefton3)

Iirc Birmingham will still want 7A*s at GCSE, rather than the 9A*s if you didn't already have A levels -
C in English Language?
Hey,
I have a feeling that I will probably get a C in my English Language, in my coursework I got a C/B (They didn't really tell me) I did retake quite a few parts and did a lot better in them I got As in them. In my exam however I didn't feel it to well. My target is a B/C and I think I may get the C. If I do get a C do I need to retake it or do you think that it would be okay keeping it? I forgot to mention that I am also dyslexic which was diagnosed in about year 3 (2002), I will also get A*s in Science and Maths if that helps you say if I need to retake it.
Thanks

Aged 17 - Medicine Hopeful... Advice?
Not sure if I created this in the right section..

I could do with some advice with what extra I can do to get into medicine at university!
I am currently in year 12, retaking Maths, Biology, Chemistry at GCSE as I didn't put any effort in it at school and got B's. I moved schools late in year 10 and had next to no options of GCSE's to take - so I ended up taking Drama, Dance, P.E BTEC and Art along with Core science, Additional science, Maths & English Lit&Lang. All of the choices I had are all completely useless to me. I got 8B's & a C in GCSE (I had no idea what I intended to do in higher education). I've been interested in medicine for a good 3 years now but only just grown up in the past few months and realised the extent of my interest - there is nothing else I want to do but something medicine related.
I hope to get A/A*s in my retakes - but again I have only just realised how much effort I need to put into my work. I've applied for Maths, Biology, Chemistry & Psychology ALevels which I'll be starting in September (Suitable subjects?). I'm currently volunteering in a hospital every Monday I started in AMU then moved in the pathology labs which I pushed as I'm more interested in forensic pathology, histology etc, and also because they didn't need me. I'm helping out in Coagulation at the moment.
After reading the medicine forums I feel completely lost because everyone has got straight A/A*s.. So if anyone has any advice for me I'd be very grateful!!
