I get the impression that everyone who had an ensuite are the ones saying "I could never live with a shared", and the ones who have a shared don't see what all the fuss is about. Nevertheless, I think an en suite for me.

What's it like sharing a bathroom at uni?
    Question says it all, really.

What's it like sharing a bathroom at uni?

Maybe, be personal. How many people do you have to share with? Have you ever experienced - or heard a story about - something particularly funny / unpleasant / unexpected in a communal bathroom? How does it differ from sharing with family members? Do you just get used to it after a while?

    I'm curious.

Just like sharing with my family. I shared with 5 last year and I share with 6 now.

Absolutely fine. I shared a bathroom for the first few weeks of uni with about 15 other people (male and female). There were 2 showers, a bath and 3 toilets and if I'm honest, there was rarely another person in the bathroom when I used it, let alone a queue. And I don't consider myself to shower at strange times of the day!!

Plus, communal bathrooms are usually cleaned by the cleaners; ensuites aren't. Bonus Also, I've found that the showers in communal bathrooms tend to be larger than those in ensuites.

The weirdest thing that ever happened in the communal bathroom was that some boys took the 'washroom' sign and turned it upside down... not that weird! Someone was apparently sick in there once but it was cleared up so quickly that it didn't bother anyone. My halls also give you a pretty hefty fine for being sick in a communal area, so people tend to use their own sinks for those purposes (or are just more sensible and don't drink so much!).

Re: What's it like sharing a bathroom at uni?
in my third year of uni atm, 2 years ago i was sharing a bathroom with one lad next door who proceeded to destroy it gradually throughout the year. In the first week we did an ice breaker in the corridor with a vodka drinking competition - to down a 1 ltr of smirnof between 2 people in less than 5 minutes. An hour later (surprisingly long) my bathroom mate ran from his room to the bathroom but seemed unable to locate the toilet and threw up in the bath. He then refused to clean it up until the morning by which point it had gone hard and looked like burnt pizza and he had to chip it away with a ruler.

Few weeks later he blocked the toilet so it was pumping crap all over the floor

Few weeks later he decided to get his mate to cut his hair in the bathroom. He was chinese and had this pretty thick wiry black hair which went everywhere. On the sink, the floor, the bath, the toilet, the door, and somehow on the ceiling. He refused to clear this up for about a week.

And that was only sharing with one!!! So yeah....

its actually fine! - its just unlocky if you get somebody who abuses it and messes it up with hair and stuff...
if you really dont like the idea of it, just keep some of those bleach toilet wipes and wipe the seat whenever you sit down and use slippers in the shower!

Its been absolutely fine for me. Two toilets and then a shower between 8, never had any problems with people all wanting to use the shower at the same time so yeah id say its a good idea especially as its usuallly cheaper than ensuite.

one toilet between 8, all good until this week when somebody got drunk and smashed the internal workings (how they did it I don't know normally the handle disconnects before any damage is done internally)

its very rare we want to use it at the same time, it hasn't happened for 4 weeks I think

It's really not that bad. You'll hardly ever see anyone else in there anyway, so it doesn't feel like you're sharing with a bunch of students.

Shared with 6, now got my own. There's hardly any difference.

I shared with five other people last year. It was fine, not quite like family but there was no queue or anything. We had two bathrooms between us (generously spaced too!) one shower and toilet room and one bath and toilet room. Never had any problems and no-one actual saw anyone else even go to the toilet! I now have an ensuite, and although I love having my own space, sharing a bathroom was not that bad.

It's fine. 3 toilets, 1 shower and 1 bath (which no-one has used yet) between 11. No problems at all.

a constant battle to see who can birth the most horrendous dump, judged by how long it can survive without anyone braving to flush it

    In halls it was ok.
No idea how many people it was shared between but I always got access to a toilet because there was one for every block, so if one was engaged you could just walk to the next one.

They were generally clean, the only regular problem encountered was when the cleaners didn't replace the toilet roll (good idea to have some spare in case this happens).

Shower rooms were separate and shared by more people but I always had mine when it was quite quiet, so I was never really inconvenienced.

    Unpleasant things:
we got an email about how someone had got "human faeces" all over one of the toilets and how we were going to have to pay for a specialised cleaner to come in :lolwut:
By the end of the year the shower drains were so clogged up with hair that they started to block and flood... It was only during the last few weeks but it was still terrible, was really nerve-wracking going to shower incase I got flooded halfway through and had to stop!

Oh, some guys came into the girls shower rooms one time I was in there :p: But that wasn't really that bad as they were just using the showers themselves (I'm assuming the boys showers were **** in comparison...)

Sharing a house with friends from halls and the bathrooms are worse because they were **** in the beginning and everyone forgets to clean them....
