    Hello

I am in my first year of Graphic Design, and after the Easter Break we are doing our own brief, but I am really struggling with ideas for what I can do, especially when there is only 5 weeks to do it.

One of our current units is Image and Meaning, but I am still struggling with what I can do, as I am someone who likes to do a lot of things, so when it comes to narrowing it down its quite hard, and it has really amazed me how unhelpful my tutors are, as a few of us have spoken to them, but we still have not been told what they are expecting from us *we haven't even officially been given a brief for it, so don't know what we are to cover, and we also have to write a proposal which is due in when we go back, but haven't been instructed on how to write one :/*

    Any ideas at all?

    Thanks in advance,

Ahhh, I wish I did graphic design!!! I assume you're doing a BTEC First? I did one in Art & Design in years 10/11 and I did my FMP on creating accessories which will help nursery children visualise stories. I ended up making figurines of all the Noah's Ark characters, flash cards and even a book bag to put it all in - it's purple and furry and awesome! But, if I were in your position I guess I would do something like re-design a company's corporate identity, pick a multinational like Coke and give them a new look, new logo, new ads, new colours etc. You could try creating a poster advertising campaign for a firm as well, and give yourself a challenging product. Oh oh oh, you could pick an issue in society these days, e.g. knife crime, prostitution, anything that's sort of in the news and use graphic design to make people aware of these issues.

Something like that? Hope this helps. :top:

And if I remember correctly, the project proposal is usually short and sweet, providing enough information as to what exactly you want to do: 200-250 words perhaps? Try a google search.

I did a degree in Graphic Design, got a 2:1

My FMP was essentially designing promotional material for a fictional computer game.

This inc. characters, vehicle design, team logos, team uniforms, instruction book, game box, posters and other quirky promo stuff- it was a racing game by the way! looked pretty dope

Wow, you're only starting your fmp? I'm currently specialised in graphics for my foundation and when I go back to uni tomorrow I'll only have three weeks left
Maybe you could make a list or diagram of all the things you're interested in with regards to graphics i.e. typography, photography, illustration etc and then from there decide what you want to work with more for your fmp. Then think about a topic you feel will motivate you for the five weeks and merge everything together to come up with possible outcomes.
Also, I doubt your tutors would be giving you an official brief because it's your own personal project so there is no right or wrong, it's all up to you.
With regards to your proposal it shouldn't be that difficult, either. For our statement of intent we had to section it into four paragraphs: What we'd learnt in foundation so far, why we specialised in graphics, what our ideas for our fmp were and then how it would be beneficial for the future. For you it would be similar, I'm assuming? But instead of talking about foundation you'd talk about the things you've done so far this year and then go off from there.
