Hi everyone. I'm in Year 12 and I want to apply to study medicine next year. I'm doing all the relevant work experience and other things I need and I am working hard to get 4 grade As at A level. However I'm a little worried that I may be penalised due to my low GCSE score even though I studied soooo hard, day in day out! At first I was like "yeah I'm so happy with them!" but now looking at what everyone else has got, it's pathetic! I was actually thinking of retaking them but everyone said I should just focus on my GCSEs.

Even if I do get awesome A Levels and do well on my BMAT/UKCAT and have a good personal statements, what does everyone think my chances are with the following GCSEs: 3 Bs, 7 As, 1 A*

    Appreciate any feedback!

    I'm currently sitting on two offers with 1.5A*s, 6A's, 3B's and 0.5Cs
My UKCAT was 697.5 average and I applied (at the time, I have since retaken modules) with ABBBBB at AS.

Work hard on all other aspects and get the relavent work experience. Also, ensure you look into GCSE requirements when you apply. There is no point applying to Birmingham, for example, as they require 8A*s. Others are less fussy, for example UEA this year was minimum 6A's.

    Hope this helps

    Heya thanks for the reply.
What universities did you apply to? And which ones did you get offers from? And what are your predicted grades/subjects for your overall A levels?

    Cheers x

    No worries

I applied to Peninsula, UEA, Cardiff (my GCSEs weren't good enough for there in the end) and Southampton

I got offers from UEA and Peninsula.
My predicted grades were AAA, but I applied to them with BBBabb, which I have since pulled up to AAAabb

Wow that's great! Congrats. I really want to apply to Southampton as it's nearer to me but would you say I had any chance of getting in purely based on my GCSE grades?

    Thanks xx

    Thanks

    Errm I can't remember what Southampton's requirements are....for some reason I'm thinking 6A's, but I'm not sure.....

But Southampton is an iffy one. If you meet the GCSE requirements I think you have just a good a chance as any, but their application system is a bit.....weird.

You have nothing to lose from applying there, but make sure you have an awesome personal statement if you do. And you still have another 3 choices if it's not good news from there.

Sounds good. Really hope I get in! I heard for medicine it's like 14 applicants per place which is insane! Dunno how I'm going to outcompete all the other brainy kids 8-|
What sort of work experience are they looking for normally?
