Warwick or York?

My boyfriend has unconditional offers from Warwick and York. The course he's applied for is equally good at both universities so it's come down to which uni has the better location/campus/night life. He's doing his military service right now so he doesn't have time to do any research, and neither of us live in the UK so we're not sure what either place is like. He hasn't visited either and he won't have time to! So please give me some advice which I can pass on to him  TIA! x
whats the course?
I've applied to both and eventually put Warwick down as firm. It completely just depends what he wants in a university. My friend wasn't keen on Warwick but I love it. Then again the only reason I didn't choose York was because it was pretty close to home and they gave me a higher offer. Because of this I'm not so sure what York's like cos I didn't really intend to go there. Warwick though is an on campus university which means everything is there on the location, shops etc. etc. This for me is really useful. You kind of have to visit the university though cos it depends from person to person. I just loved the atmosphere I got from Warwick and I've been quite a few times cos my brother goes there too; he loves it as well.

Thanks for your reply! (: I think what he wants most is essentially a really picturesque location, he's not too bothered about nightlife, he's happy just with a pub. His first choice was St Andrews simply for the location and because it's very beautiful, but he got rejected so now it's between Warwick and York. I've heard York is very green which I think would appeal to him... Really tricky not being able to visit!

I think York is the better option. Though both are campus universities , York Uni is close to the city of York which has lots of bars. So he can stay on campus (which is really green , with lots of ducks and a lake in the middle , in one word - picturesque) and whenever he wants he can pop in the city for a drink/shopping/walk etc. Long story short - Good mix of both worlds
Warwick however is in the middle of nowhere so personally I can easily get claustrophobia there ...

York Uni itself consists of quite a number of 60s era concrete buildings (read: ugly), and isn't a particularly traditional campus. But I think that's moot when you consider you'll be living in York, which is a beautiful, compact city rich in history. I should warn you that while there are an absolute ton of great pubs in York, the nightclubs are a bit limited.

The university is on the edge of the city, but the transport between campus and city is pretty extensive, as is the bus system in general in York, so you should have no problems getting around wherever you are. This is speaking as a York native.

I can't really comment on Warwick except for the fact it is somewhat out of Coventry.
which does he prefer? What area does he like better?
has he been to visit them?
If he wants somewhere picturesque - don't got to Warwick, as it is in Coventry, not Warwick (which is a lovely small town). Coventry is a post war nightmare as far as architecture goes, although the university itself has one campus and an excellent reputation - well done for getting in there as I know a few rejects. Housing would be cheap though in the 2nd year as Coventry has lots of little terraces to rent.

York is a beautiful city - the Minster and medieval streets - lovely place - but I would have thought that Warwick was the better uni.

So it depends what he wants - York is by far the nicer town to be in.

Warwick's on the West Mids/Warwickshire border, in a self-contained modern campus. There's plenty of greenery and pretty walks and lakes and that kind of thing. The buildings are 60s to 2000s and are generally white or brick and low rise - I think the campus has a nice spacious feel. The facilities are second to none, with the biggest and best Students' Union in the UK and also a big arts centre which has a cinema, theatres, art gallery and so on. It's all kept in great condition as well as the uni seems to spend a lot of money of facilities and upkeep (something I don't get the feel of from York from my last visit - quite a lot of the buildings seemed in need of a bit of upkeep there, although maybe it's got better in the last couple of years and current York students can set me straight).

They have a virtual tour online http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/campus/tour

I went to Warwick and think it's utterly brilliant. It's by far my favourite modern campus.

I'd choose Warwick over York. I had York as my firm but when I went to visit it I really didn't like it. The town itself was pleasant but I didn't like the campus at all - it was a concrete and mud mess with ducks pooing everywhere. I liked the town but I didn't like how the current students were putting so much emphasis on drinking which is something I don't do. This really put me off.

I have seen many pictures of Warwick and it looks pretty and in my opinion it's the better university with the better reputation but from what I have heard it's quite isolated. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, like with RHUL, it'll save your bf a lot of money not being tempted to go out all the time, but there will be enough for him to do on campus to keep him amused.

Well, by the sounds of things it seems as if he'd prefer York. (Based on the fact he really wanted to go to St Andrews.)

Though, the major point, has he actually visited either? Has he thought about the atmosphere and location of each? Has he compared the modules on offer? I don't know much about philosophy, but there is bound to be some difference in optional modules and specialisations of the department.

Additionally, his career options from either won't differ given the subject (and the fact I'm assuming he isn't going for investment banking).

Unfortunately he can't visit, he's doing compulsory military service here in Switzerland which only ends at the end of August. He only gets about half a day off per week so he won't have time to visit these places... or do any proper research seeing as he spends most of his spare time catching up on sleep. He only visited his top 2 choices because he thought he was in with a chance of at least one of them. Silly I know but not much he can do about it now! Neither of us really have any knowledge about different towns in the UK, so all he's going to be basing his decision on is what various other people have to say about both universities. Thanks for the help though, I'll tell him to look into the departments a bit more... though I do think all it will come down to is which is the nicer place to live  x

York is a much nicer city, but I absolutely fell in love with Warwick and hated York. (I actually applied for a PhD there, went back and realised that no I really did dislike it, and it wasn't just my impressionable 18 year old self being mad about paying £160 for travel to an "interview") It probably comes down a lot to the people who showed me around, but Warwick has an awesome gym, and awesome music venue, and the union seemed really vibrant. York just seemed quite dead by comparison and nobody that I met was thrilled to be there. I'd pick Warwick hands down
