I applied for every job available at my uni, nearing the end of 1st year and I'm glad I didn't get a job actually, you need all the time you need to make new friends, socialise and get used to the different style of working - i.e. doing your own reading! A-Level's don't prepare you for that :P

When I was at Sheffield Uni I worked at Staples on a Sunday only, 8 hours a week work, and nothing ever happens on a weekend at uni cos all the student nights are in the week so all you miss is people bumming around and not getting up til 3ish.

    What was teh pay like?

Bar jobs are only social if you work afternoons/early evenings where there's not many people in and you have the chance to have a bit of a chat. Working at night in a student bar is a nightmare, its basically serving one drink after another with a relentless crush of people at the bar which never goes down, and the more and more people get drunk and have to wait, the more rude they get.

Haha, good luck with getting a "good" part-time job, there are few enough of the bad ones.
Work for a supermarket like Asda or Tesco. Think about it, the employ so many staff it's easy to do shift swaps if you want to. They give you exam leave, better pay than a lot of places (I get £6.24 ph). Plus you get 10% discount and other perks as well. Time and half on bank holidays and its quite easy to get overtime if you need it.

When I go to uni I'm gonna try and just have the one shift on a sunday (12-8 or something) and get a few extra hours on holidays

Most importantly as they are massive companies, they take care of you. Its not like working for an independent shop where the boss can fire you if he just doesnt like you.

Cannot really see a bad point in working for a large supermarket.

I just remembered about clinical trials.. It's not exactly a part-time job, but it pays very well!
