Re: Strathy Q&A
Hey!! Im going to strathy in september
and i have quite a few questions tbh
1. Have you lived in any of the halls?? ...if so what was/is your experience of living in them?
2. what did you do for freshers week?
3. do students at strathy do electives?
4. do you have to pay to be part of the union and gym?
i know thats a lot
-
Re: Strathy Q&A
1. Can I apply for accommodation online with a conditional offer? I'm guaranteed it anyway, but I just want it out the way.
2. It is true that you can pick and choose your timetable?
3. It is also true that you can pick your assessment type?
(Qs 2&3 were raised at my visit to the uni, but the postgrad students didn't answer them that well
)

Re: Strathy Q&A1. No, but i partied hard enough in them. They are pretty good. There are two halls right across from the library. They are really good, lots of fun parties and stupid stuff goes on there. Chancellor halls are a bit further back, and tend to have more foreign students in them.(Original post by Zan1992)

You will make your best friends here. Especially in freshers week - so many halls parties as well as the freshers fair. Rooms are basic, with a big living/kitchen area. Which is all you need for being a student. Some halls may have en suites, but a lot are shared bathrooms. Birkbeck halls are real good fun. They have a bit of a reputation.
Edit Garnett halls are where it's at IMO. They are in arranged in a square looking onto one square plaza. It's so lovley in summer when everyone is out too. And right beside a bar too =]
2. Got drunk. But seriously, get involved at freshers week. Go to everything you can. If you're staying in halls freshers week it total banter to go out with all your flat mates and meet everyone. Please remember people are coming from all over the place to the uni - so some people will know no one, so it's all about getting everyone involved and having a good time. The atmosphere is actually amazing.
I should be part of the Freshers Team this year so i will post information when i get it.
3. Depends on your course. I got electives in my first year, but not in my second. Just depends how many credits you need, and how many your classes are worth. Eg say your 1st year classes are worth 100credits, but you need 120 for first year. Then you could do two 10 credit electives, or one 20 credit elective.
4. The union is free to go to. The sports union - you only really have to join if you are competing for the uni (football, rugby, basketball etc) for insurance purposes and that. It's a one off payment for the year.
The gym is also like £70 for two semesters, or £40 for one semester. That's off the top of my head, ill check prices when im next thereLast edited by Gary10k; 16-04-2010 at 13:47. -
Re: Strathy Q&A1. If you got a condition you should have got a letter regarding applying for accommodation? And yes you should apply. If you haven't received such letter e-mail the uni now.(Original post by LuhLah)

2. What course you doing? Il give you an example of my course-
Immunology/Pharmacology. In first year I had classes I had to do (biology, chemistry, stats, labs etc) but I then needed to make up an additional 20 credits. So I got a big list of classes that I could chose to do to make up my credits. Could be two 10 credit classes or one 20 credit class.
3. How do you mean assessment? In terms of dissertation (your final project for your degree) Then yes. Once you get an idea you discuss it with lecturers and then come up with a final idea (hypothesis if your a scientist) and how you will carry it out. Not sure how it works for language students.
Good man. Like it's a good gym for what you pay (see above). Plenty of classes, squash and badminton courts etc. Got a cardio suite and plent of good stuff if you are into power lifting and weight lifting.(Original post by Z_Ahmed)
How's the gym and sport facilites at strathy? -

I only accepted by conditional offer on tuesday so maybe that's why.
I'm doing chemistry
I mean things like testing, but you've covered that, cheers! -
Re: Strathy Q&AAs a chemist, you will carry out loads of experiments (and your lecturers are so unbelievably cool- not sarcasm) Come second year you need to do a lot more "thinking for yourself" when it comes to doing experiments too.(Original post by LuhLah)

I was going to firm glasgow, but they just didn't seem enthusiastic and I got a hint of snobbery :/ Maybe I'm just weird
Do you recommend any particular accommodation? I was thinking about putting Murray Hall as my first choice, but I have no idea for my second choice
I'm looking for a place that's close to most of the buildings and has a lot of character. In the visit, I went to the kinda courtyard place with all the halls near the John Anderson building, and they looked quite nice!
Also, how friendly did/do you find the other students to be?
I love the little bookshop near the library!
and the wee gym looks lovely

Birckbeck (Spelling?) has the reputation. It's right across from the wee book shop and library. It's where all the parties and scandal seem to come from. Just beside that is Garnet halls, which are a good choice. Like I said, all the Garnet halls face onto one square and they are beside a bar, library, Birckbeck halls and all other halls really. -
Re: Strathy Q&ADetailed response! Thanks(Original post by Gary10k)

First year is quite easy (I had Adv chem and Adv bio) but if you haven't done that then you might need to knuckle down. :P Second year physiology is really interesting and I think you will enjoy that.
Those who do indust placement have less classes than the other pharmacologists I'm sure. You might even have a different pharmacology class with the pharmacists. But truthfully I enjoy the Immunology much much more. It's so interesting.
Actually, I'll go download the pharmacology with indust placement timetable and send you it later -

but hopefully i'll be okay. I had a hard time deciding between ind. placement and immunology
both seem really interesting to me. Seeing the timetable would be really good!
thank you, thank you, thank you!!

1st year classes include :
Human Physiology
Bioscience and Stats [not cool]
Practical Pharmacology - this is course specific.
Then you have to pick some electives, for example forensics or drug abuse. -
Re: Strathy Q&Acan u email it to me? > Mod edit: e-mail address removed (please do not post e-mail addresses on the public forum)(Original post by Gary10k)

Re: Strathy Q&AMurray Hall is the only 'dorm' style halls on campus I'm sure. There's about 18 per floor or something. 2 guys and 2 girlsfloors. Its also on the very outskirts of the campus. You get the view of the hospital(Original post by Conker18)
I have applied for Murray Hall(1st choice), Forbes and Garnett.
Are they any good? Also what else is in the building with Todd's Bar.
and a cemetry in the distance...
I'm in Forbes
Its alright the ones I'm in. Although we only have 4 altogether in this block while the other 2 blocks are 6. Garnett are the same but I think they haven't been recently refurbished like Forbes was a few years ago I'm sure. Oh, I (and this flat, and I assume this block) have horrible yellow painted walls! eurgh!!!! And a nursery beneath us... no joke...
I think I would've liked to be put in Garnett tbh. Its very central on to the little square side and over to Birkbeck view.
Um, not a lot Todd wise. Todd's is just a bar really. But the whole building has the Accomm Office, Laundrette and meeting rooms etc. and a kitchen and bins...Last edited by javjamoll; 18-04-2010 at 19:53.
