Re: Oxford Maths. If you are worried about stats qs at interviews, I would recommend just applying for straight maths. Maths and maths&stats share identical topics in the first year (at least I think) and you can easily switch to maths& stats if you wanted to (I think some here even switched in his second year).(Original post by sophie168)
Hi,
I want to apply to Oxford University next year but I wonder between 2 courses Mathematics and Statistics or Mathematics. Could you mind giving ideas about the differences between 2courses? Is there any difference when it comes to interview between 2 courses? Because I do not take statistics in A level I studied Mechanics, I am worried if the interviewer asks me something about statistics if I apply to study Mathematics and Statistics. Would you mind giving me any ideas about interview? Thank you so much! -
Re: Mathematics Or Maths with StatisticsExeter :(Original post by sophie168)
would you mind recommending me college to study Mathematics and Statistics between Exeter and Trinity College? I cannot find how many students studying mathematics and statistics at these colleges?
The College admits about eight students each year for the Mathematics group of subjects; although there are no separate quotas the total may be increased to ten to accommodate Maths & Philosophy students.
http://www.exeter.ox.ac.uk/teachinga...h/mathematics/
Trinity :
Don't know.
Colleges only tend to give vague numbers about how many they admit for each subject, because it can vary. For example for the last 5 years there have been 3 History and Economics students at my college, in the first year there are only 2 because the tutors didn't find another candidate they wanted it. Similarly there's one extra linguist in my year than others because the tutors couldn't decide between two...
So playing the numbers game is not really advisable because it fluctuates. Unless of course you're just enquiring because you don't want to be one of only 2 Maths students at a college. -
Re: Oxford Maths.No. The stats suggest it is in fact the other way round but I would assume that they actually have exactly the same standards for each and it is simply the level of applicant that differs slightly.(Original post by sophie168)
I wonder that is it easier to apply for mathematics and statistics than mathematics?
As for between Exeter and Trinity, if you are applying for Maths and Stats then I would say Trinity has the slight advantage as Matthias Winkel is a tutor there and he has lectured some of the 2nd and 3rd year stats courses. Not a massive advantage, but I did find it frustrating when I was at Queen's that we only had a grad student giving us tutes in 1st year as there was no Stats fellow. -
Re: Mathematics Or Maths with Statistics
So the college will accept 10 in total for the group of mathematics not just for one seperate course like maths and stats? Would you mind giving me any advices on how to prepare for the interview? I want to apply to study mathematics and statistics and I wonder whether the tutors will ask about statistics in interview because usually statistics need some tables. And I think it is not convenient to ask the statistics question in interview? Would you mind giving me ideas of how the interview in mathematics and statistics like?

Re: Oxford Maths.
Would you mind giving me ideas about Maths and Statistics 's interview like? Will they ask about statistics question? For example, giving you a table of data or sth? Cause i do not study Statistics in A level so I am a bit worried about it. And would you mind telling me how to revise for interview for maths and statistics 's course?

Re: Mathematics Or Maths with StatisticsThe way I read it is that they typically have 10 places for Mathematicians but the number of Maths, Maths and Stats, Math&Phil, and Maths and CompSci out of those 10 can change every year.(Original post by sophie168)

I don't do Maths so can't help with the rest sorry! -
Re: Oxford Maths.Mine didn't have any stats in- it would be quite unfair to seeing as some people such as you might not have done any. I think if anything it would be more likely to be probability based as I think probability/combinatorics topics are more reasonably intuitive but I would still be surprised if that came up.(Original post by sophie168)

As I said in the other thread, make sure you know C1 and C2 inside out- I think my interview may have been particularly easy but knowing everything to do with sequences (such as deriving the sum of a geometric series) meant it didn't seem too difficult when I was asked to do stuff with these. -
Re: Oxford Maths.
I'm intrigued by Question 6,got most of it right, except i stumbled into not realising how bob charlie could use alice's answer to formulate his and was interested in what sort of course I should apply for because I wasn't thinking about Maths and Computer Science and What has logic got to do with computers? and this question was a lot,lot easier than the rest of the paper.I'm in Y10 by the way.

Re: Oxford Maths.I just read the typical Simon Singh ones (The Code Book and Fermat's Last Theorem) and read one called In Code as well.
Was regretting claiming that this was down to my interest in number theory since at my second college they then gave me a question on number theory because of it, so just be careful with what you say! As it was the question wasn't too bad but certainly wasn't my stongest area! -
Re: Oxford Maths.Computer Science (as taught at Oxford) is very mathematical and logical, hence why the Maths+CS course exists. You should consider it.(Original post by Dalek1099)

As the majority of the paper tests understanding of AS Maths, it's unsurprising you found that question significantly easier, as it doesn't require maths you haven't done. -
Re: Oxford Maths. The first question I got in my first interview, as a Further Maths applicant, was a C3 question. Pretty much all the rest were about the ability to think rather than actual knowledge, but judging by that question I suspect it'll be adjusted a little.(Original post by IAmTheChosenOne)
For the interview, will it only be based on C1 and C2 like MAT?
Or would it be adjusted to what each applicants have learnt so far?
