Re: Is moving out in Uni worth it?I like living away, don't like having flatmates. Moving into a studio flat in September which will be far better for me. Some people like it because they have strict parents and they want "freedom". I already had that. I just like it 'cause I can chill in my own space. :P(Original post by Adzkleo)
Honestly, do you regret it? I'm having mixed feelings because.... well my parents are worried about the debt I'll be in after I finish, and if I do move in maybe I'll have complete-douchebag-flatmates.
I do want to move out though. So, is it worth it? All the independence etc.? -

Re: Is moving out in Uni worth it?You haven't said anything to make me clash with you!(Original post by ch0llima)
The benefits outweigh the drawbacks IMO and I have zero regrets. People say "Living in halls costs money, better stay at home", but really, you're sacrificing all the fun and social opportunities for the sake of saving £3.5k, which is a drop in the ocean of how much you'll earn and spend throughout your life. Why hold back?
Oh, and if tradition is anything to go by, I'll end up clashing with TheSownRose over this issue
No argumentative remarks, no insulting of people that do live at home through uni, just an opinion. We're all entitled to one.
Wow, people that don't go to uni must be really screwed for life...(Original post by Bobbler)
Of course it's worth it, how else are you suppose to get independence? Plus the debt we acquire half of it we probably won't have to pay it back, it's just like an extra tax. & you'll meet awesome people either way if you have terrible flatmates

As opposed to limiting yourself to five unis that aren't necessarily within commuting distance that offer courses at your level in what you want to do?(Original post by Rob da Mop)
I don't get people like you. Surely by wanting to live at home you limit yourself to maybe 5 unis within commuting distance that offer courses at your level in what you want to do. What's the point of that?

Re: Is moving out in Uni worth it?
I'm living at home for a whole variety of reasons. These are my personal views so you'll have to think which ones apply to you. I'm 10 minutes away from my place of study so there's no benefit in terms of travel, although I would happily commute for two hours a day because I do enjoy driving and would do it if I wanted to go to a specific uni. In terms of the freedom, I've had that since I was about 17, my parents don't restrict me.
I don't really get the independence thing people talk about, the independence as in having to be flat broke, sorting all your own meals out, washing all your own clothes etc etc. I figure I'll be moving out soon enough, and I rather like having my parents to support me. Lastly, the social side, life is what you make it and I haven't struggled to make friends. Although I'd rather have no friends and not be 12-15k of debt by the time I graduate. Maybe I'm old beyond my years but I'd rather put that into a mortgage! -
Re: Is moving out in Uni worth it?I limited myself to universities that did the course I wanted to do. If you're staying at home you're limiting yourself to the course you want to do that's within commuting distance. Is compromising on your education by immediately cutting out 95% of universities really worth it?(Original post by TheSownRose)

Re: Is moving out in Uni worth it?
I lived at home for first year.
I lived away for second year.
Currently in third year, abroad.
Probably stay at home for fourth year.
I loved living away from home. However I incurred no debt from first year.
Fourth year, I'm assuming it'll be better to save some money and study at home because it's worth 75% of my degree. People won't be partying as hard. -
Re: Is moving out in Uni worth it?I'm sure everyone moves out at some point regardless of uni. I was on about moving out, idiot.
EDIT: yeah that's right, neg rep me... i'm sure that you could've deduced from the thread name that i was talking about moving out when you go to uni, & that the person here is going to uni. Otherwise he'd be at home ¬_¬ You were just being pedantic, and lol at you.Last edited by Bobbler; 12-02-2011 at 19:06. -

You need to move out of home at some point.. This is the best time, then again though it depends how close you are to uni from home.. -

Re: Is moving out in Uni worth it?Like I said, I was describing my personal circumstances, not anyone else's. And living at home doesn't mean you don't have control over your own life and aren't looking after yourself! My parents aren't controlling and know if I want to do something then I can and I will. I live my own life without being under anyone else's control and have done for a long time, I don't need to go to uni to be treated like an adult. I'm fully capable of looking after myself but can't deny it's nice at the end of a long day to have my dinner cooked for me.(Original post by Cicerao)

Re: Is moving out in Uni worth it?
I'm a first year and I live at home. I'm really enjoying myself. But that's not to say everyone else would.
I think living at home should only be considered if there's a local uni that suits your needs educationally. There's no point in limiting yourself to a sub-standard uni that doesn't do your perfect course just to stay at home. However, if a local uni suits your needs then I would give it some serious consideration. You save on loads of money, and unlike the common preconception, you don't become a social leper.
Just thought I'd throw both sides out there, there's nothing more frustrating than people pushing their own choices onto your life

Re: Is moving out in Uni worth it?In your exact words, "Of course it's worth (moving out in uni), how else are you suppose to get independence?"(Original post by Bobbler)
I'm sure everyone moves out at some point regardless of uni. I was on about moving out, idiot.
Implying you can only get independence by moving out in uni, therefore people who don't go to uni don't become independent. -
