Seriously, 50£ a week is PLENTY. I'm living on around about £20 a week, and thats including train journeys home for the hospital. Go en-suite, it saves so many issues and problems. Wish I had had the money to go en-suite.
i have £5 pounds a day to live on :frown:

...this has me stumped. Do they not eat?

See post #17!
I would never be able to do that, i guess tesco value and pasta :P
Last semester I was on £30 a week and managed easily, £50 should be fine if you're not stupid with it.

£50 a week is ok to live off, i've done it before. Food was most expensive for me, so it use to tip me over the £50 mark along with train tickets, books, and general crap.
I've also lived off £15 a week, but that was when i stopped buying as much food.

You'll be fine living off that, at first you might slip up, and over spend, but you'll get the hang of it. I would personally opt for the en-suite, mainly because its nicer having your own bathroom, and the shared ones i lived in where awful :frown:

If your planning on getting a part time job, you'll have more money to spend per week, so untill then you'll be fine.

Don't go for the en-suite- it's not worth it for the £20 in my opinion.
Where do you live OP?

I spend £65 per week on average. That covers London transport, ink cartridge, paper, 14 meals + snacks, one or two recreational events (eating out/movies with gf). £65 is just enough for me on average. If you go clubbing etc, then £50 won't be enough.
£50 a week is plenty. I probably average about half that.

And shared bathrooms aren't that bad either. You won't have to clean them

I live off £35 a week currently and that feeds me, petrol, clothes, social stuff and books. You just have to learn not to go crazy with it. IMO, £20 is worth an en-suite, the shared bathrooms are horrible here, but it depends on how many you share with and what they are like.
It entirely depends on how much you go out, if you want to go out a lot it won't be enough. £50 is easily enough for food and transport and toiletries.

i've lived of £10 a week for like a month....wasn't too bad...was only able to go out like twice though lol

but £50 is easily enough

So, what happens if you get ill and need to pay for a prescription? Or you have to photocopy 100 pages out of a book cos there is only one in the library and it isn't for loan? Or you get stuck alone in the bum end of nowhere cos your friends have vanished and to be safe you need a cab? Or if you need to buy a jersey for the football team you've just joined? Or etc etc etc?

£50 a week? Good luck...

There is a really good online calculator for this (somewhere!) (I know KCLSU has one customized for KCL, however this is quite specific to a London Uni and their grant level etc. there is a separate generic one somewhere.)

Either Glasgow or Edinburgh. So not as expensive as London, but still in a city.

If you have a budget of £50 a week and have to spend £100 one week, you simply live off £25 for 4 weeks. Simples.

Not simples. Awful.

To live in any comfort or security (or healthily, you know, fresh meat, fresh vegetables) I seriously reckon a ton a week.

i think en-suite is worth it, sharing bathrooms with people you hardly know would drive me crazy, i woudn't let go of my sanitiser

50 quid is fine
I live on £30 ish a week, but I rarely go out drinking and that doesn't take into account things like textbooks at the start of the year and the odd new pair of jeans or christmas presents or whatever. You could live on £50 but if you're worried just go for shared bathroom and save a bit of money

I see.

I think your main considerations should be transport, printing costs, home-made meal vs takeaways, going out. Lol thats pretty much everything.

Anyways, for example, during my undergrad years, I had to spend £0 for transport. I went to Royal Holloway and everything was pretty much walking distance. Find out how much you would have to spend for transport.

Also, I didn't have to print as much, most of the material could be found in textbooks. During this year, however, I'm having to print sh!tloads of stuff (journal articles) and I had to buy a printer+scanner+photocopier. If you can, find out how much you would have to print on average for academic purposes.

If you make meals by yourself, then that would save a lot of money. I'm at Uni during lunchtime 3 days a week and I pay around £2 for a meal from Uni outlets. Other than that, most of my meals are homemade and that saves me a lot of money.

Also, you would have to take into account how much you are gonna go out. If you join a group where your mates are gonna take you to Union nights every week, then I'm afraid £50 won't be enough.

Hope that helped.
It really depends what sort of lifestyle you expect to live (is the simple answer) :P. I'll be getting £50 a week which is fine for me as my parents will do some of my food shopping once every month or so and I really don't go out clubbing or anything. If you're getting a part time job you should be fine, try buying your food in bulk with your housemates or something!

Emphatically, definitely, and absolutely, nowhere near enough. 100 quid minimum after accommodation is the absolute base amount of cash that you could live on to feed, clothe, socialise, exercise, and have a phone, as well as paying for books and stuff.

You haven't a blind hope on 50 a week. Ridiculous.

Not sure if you are joking :s-smilie:

OP

50 quid a week should be fine, you just have to be smart, and you won't be able to go out all the time with that budget, or at least if you do go out don't drink much, it is what I did and you save a lot of money. Shop at supermarkets, and use amazon for books if you need to buy them and you can get by
