Please help, just need opinions im finding it so hard to choose which one to put down as my insurance, any help greatly appreciated!

Come to Queen Mary! We've got an awesome engineering department here.
go to the one that you liked when you visited the uni, your gut instinct is usually the best one
whats your firm?

i would never suggest UWE - it is awful like really bad in terms of student life etc. Bristol is good for student life but the actual uni is rubbish!

Cheers for the advice buddy. I've planned on firming Uni of Manchester since a while back, but i ****** up my last physics module, so i really need to consider choosing the right insurance as theres a good chance i'll end up with a C in Physics, and end up there. (I need ABB for Manchester). UWE seems to have a greater passion for engineering, but its not as good a University overall as QM, its alot less prestigious. Also with QM i'd be living in London so thats always a bonus, any further advice ? Cheers for replying

don't give up hope with manchester they may still let you in with the C if you do really well in other subjects or your other physics modules.

Have you had a look a league tables for the subject? Stuff like the graduate employment's good to have a look at along with student satisfaction

I wen't on the open day and i didn't think the facilities were too marvellous. It didn't seem like they had a great passion for engineering. Can you tell me some more info about yourself ? Like what your studying and what year your in etc. Thanks for the reply :P

Currently i'm a first year and we've been doing:

Fluid Dynamics
Stress Analysis
Thermodynamics
Dynamics (Like Mechanics in Physics A2 but stepped up alot)
2 Core Maths modules

All those are done by all everyone in the engineering department and we have an Aspects module which specialises in your field.

From what 've heard from my friends doing Mech Eng they've been doing about turbines in powerplants and the details of motorcycle gearing ratios and powertrains.

Despite this, engineering at QM is still sh*t. You'll realise this when you enter semester 4 onwards.

Going to give any reasons?

The modules are only geared towards making you a specialist in what QM researches in and not an all rounded Engineer. So getting an Engineering job in the end will only really be possible in companies that are tied with the university (for which you probably will need a PhD anyway).

Majority of the "lecturers" are those who you cant understand as they have really strong/ foreign accents, and all the material can be self taught a month before exams.

In the end, you'll think whether it was really worth spending 3/4 years of your life (academically).

Anyway, good luck!

Ahh cool, sounds like my kinda thing. Do you think i should go for Student satisfaction or graduate prospects because its literally like QM has one and UWE has the other

Are you accepted on the BEng or MEng program?
If you're on the BEng you dont have to worry about graduate prospects as i've found out from alot of companies that you'll need at least Masters level education to get anywhere so you'd probably do your MSci elsewhere.

Yeah i applied for BEng, good idea i never really thought about tat. If it was your decision though would you go for Queen Mary or UWE and why ? Cheers

Personally i'd pick QM again. If nothing else for the location. I was in the middle of the countryside for all my schooling so there wasnt much to do so I really wanted to go to London. The uni's basically a 10 minute tube journey from Central London so it's perfect.

You have to decide on what's important to you.

As a first year mech engineer at UWE i have no regrets about choosing it. The course so far has been quite fun but challenging at the same time. The only first year module that was a bit **** was the electronics one, but i'm a mechanical engineer, not electrical so u can guess why. That module also had the only lecturers who U could not understand, mainly due to there ethnicity. But the electronics module is meant to be updated for next year so it shouldn't be as bad.

The other modules are fine with a good mix of lectures, tutorials, labs and computer sessions.

As for BEng or Meng, as Ozzy91 said, most employers will not even look at you unless u have a Masters. But the fact that your accepted on BEng at Uwe doesn't matter. Initially when you start, everyone is placed on the MEng course, regardless of the one you applied for. This is because the first two years of the MEng and BEng are the same. After the 2nd year, when you get ur results you will be given the option to continue on the MEng, if u have an average of 60%+. So there shouldn't be any worries there.

As for the lectures, apart from the electronics guy, everyone else i've had has been great. There's a few funny ones, one especially. But they all enjoy what they do and it shows, the lectures and tutorials are all done in good spirits, and as the classes are only small and theres quite a lot of contact time, they do tend to learn your names, which i like.

That is the course outline showing all the modules for the MEng, elsewhere on the site is the outline for the BEng, as well as staff profiles. I recommend reading through it and seeing what is what.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

As much as I hate QMUL for personal reasons, it is still a better Uni than UWE and will therefore be better for you in a lot of ways, employment, prestige etc

I can imagine where your coming from its probably explains why QM has such poor graduate prospects. Would you recommend i ensure UWE then? Whats your thought son that as a university

I would recommend working your a** off and getting your firm :p:.

In terms of hours, 1st semester clocked in at 21 hours a week, 2nd semester in at 14 hours a week. Add into that 25 hours workshop done over a 5 week period so it quite a lot of contact time. The uni tries to avoid having classes on Wednesday as this is when a lot of the sports teams have matches, and Friday tend to be a half day. As its only the first year most of the classes are theory, but there split between big lectures and small tutorials. The tutorials tend to be small classes, about 15-20 and is split between teaching and questions. The lectures are what they are, but they are backed up by tutorials of again 15-20 people. As far as labs, its first year so there will not be a lot. Each week you get a 2 hour lab for "Materials and Manufacture" which tend to be quite fun, and only about 10 people. During the second semester there are a set of labs for "Stess and Dynamics" and "Thermo and Fluids" each being 2 2 hour lab sessions, with a range of experiments. There is also the 25 hours of workshop time as well, so that comes to 65 hours of labs/workshops. The rest being lectures or tutorials. One module "Engineering Design" is always done in computer rooms. 1st semester we did CAD, designing a plug valve, we also mathematical modelled a trebuchet, and then tested are predictions by building a working model. At the moment we're just finishing designing a double wishbone suspension system for a car of our choosing, so this module is good fun also.

As for the social aspect, I live at home which means I miss out on a few social aspects but i'm not that kind of person anyway. From what i've seen and been told, the on campus accommodation is expensive but very nice and only a few years old, and you are right next to the tech block. The down side is that the social life on campus can be a bit dull. There are 3 bars which do theme nights etc, but all the action is in town. A lot of the people I know live in the city centre and get the free bus to and from uni. The advantage being that the city is a student city, lots a bars and clubs for different taste, large shopping centre and being in the centre its on your door step.

As far as my offer, I applied for the BEng and was offered 260, got 280, and am currently working at a 80%+ average.
