.:fluff:.
geology is classed as an "earth science" and i use it as an additional science in one specific area, although it is sorta a cross between geography and science (you'll find alot of geography and geology class at AS-Level) As for not doing it at GCSE i wouldn't worry. My school ONLY do A-level geology so i hadn't had any experience of the sbject what-so-ever before last year but still managed an A grade a as-level. It is a quite specific area so you might find if you don't enjoy geography(and mostly chemistry) that you might not enjoy geology.....good luck with whatever you choose anyway

Hey Fluff...thanks for your reply....but what do you think about IT for AS level?i mean, ive ALWAYS hated IT but my school made it compulsary for GCSE so I had to take level 2 and surprisingly..I PASSED!!!do u think I should tke it??The thing is..i rely wnt to do dentistry...but I dnt lyk ANY of the subjects Im gone tke...but Im gona grin n bear it...cos I REALLY REALLY wana do dentistry.so I myt as well take IT init?tel me wat u think.thnx

the IT course that my school run has courseowrk that is about 60% of the grade, my best freidn did around 400 pages coursework, he got an A in the end but it was alot of staying behind after school etc...but it depends which course your school do.

If just done chemistry and biology AQA for as level and they are hard subjects, hated biology so ended up dropping it next year, both very hard but if you don't like them then i think you might struggle (I'm not being nasty when i say that  ) what about histroy or business studies as a 4th? or even psychology if you school offer it?

The subjects your going to take are good enough for dentistry, one of my best friends wants to be a dentist and is taking chemistry, biology and psychology next year. let me know what happens?

Hey i studied geology for A level and it also became my favourite subject (before that I was an ''artist'' haha). I am now going to Manchester University to study Earth Science Masters (this means if i wanted to i could go on to do a phd.)
Lots of people go to do Geology at uni without having done the A level, as it isn't offered at every school, so the first year is like a foundation year and very similar to A level (quite glad about this as I took a year out and have forgotten lots). So if you go straight to uni, first year will be a breeze with pleanty of time for socialising.
Definently check out Manchester University, it is so ace.

I've just finished doing my A2 in geology, thoroughly enjoyed it. Got to go to Iceland last year aswell which was very good.

I was under the impression that WJEC was the only board that offered it (the one i did it with) so perhaps thats not true.

I've also heard that the first year of geology degree is like doing the a-level because so many people don't do it at a2. So i'm glad i'm not doing it at Uni. Because i think it would get bored and prefer not to "waste" a year. Allthough obviously it would be easier and there would be more socialising.

So, yes. Good subject!

Iv just finished OCR AS geology. Got an A and loved every bit of it. I found the course pretty easy compared to my other courses and it fits in well with chem and physics and maths and makes a great alternative to biology or at least it did for me. I definately recommend it to anyone who wants to do a science course but isnt sure which one to choose.
I really love the outdoors, I love all my geog field trips n I think geol sounds great. I'm wondering to take it as an AS next year on top of my A- Levels. the only problem is my subjects aren't really related to it. I do English Lang, Graphics, psych, geog n general studies.
Do you think I'd cope?

My boyfriend will be doing Geology at Bristol uni from October this year; he loved it at A-level. He went on so many trips, some local, some to Wales, the Lake District (including one on my bday  ) and once to Iceland. He got BBD in his A-levels, so missed his Bristol offer which was BBB, but they still let him in without even asking what went wrong!

Ooh I know lots of Geology-related puns, prepare to cringe:

Geology rocks!!
Geologists aren't perfect, they have their faults.
You try to be Gneiss, but people take you for Granite.
My sediments exactly.

:p:

mmhhhh....verrrryyyyyy interesting.what other things did he mention in his UCAS form/interview?Does he have any extra-curricular "things" or talents????? (basically...anything other than his academic ability)

geography is related to geology :p: a few things over lap like glaciation, rivers, volcanos etc...

i did chemistry, biology and psychology aswell as geology and i coped with it pretty well, i can't see any reason why you wouldn't cope with it
Wow, I wish my school did geology. It sounds like all the good bits of geography, which is cool. Well, if I end up at Cam for Nat Sci, I might just do one module of geology!!
hey if you all do geology wonder if you can help me do you know what constitutes lower lias ???? also do you know what valley-gravel and rainwash is???

cheers

I start at Imperial next month but to do geophysics not geology. They're quite similar, I think.
