This question is very annoying...I've been trying to figure it out myself.
Every university uses a different scale. GPAs are cumulative, so it's harder to compare them to a degree system because those are heavily based on exam performance.
From what I've looked into, this is the breakdown
1 = 3.7-4.0
2:1 = 3.3-3.6

I agree... I am planning to study abroad as well and indeed, many universities use a different conversion method, and usually it is also hard to find it. I think your British conversions are right.

I gathered that some unis convert the 2:1 as being between 3.0 and 3.6.

For some other unis, meanwhile, 2:1 is converted depending on whether it's a "high upper second class" or a "low upper second class." For "high upper second class," i think the range is 3.3 to 3.6. For "low upper second class," i think it's 3.0 to 3.3.

I guess I'm lucky. GPA's in America are translated into alphabetical grades. 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0 would be A, B, C, D, Unsatisfactory. Well at my college anyway!
