I am currently familiarizing myself with French, I know loads of people speak it but I want to speak it too so I can have something to talk about with quite a few other people from different countries.

Although I started French at the age of 5, I never learnt much because of other commitments and school etc. Also my French teacher didn't like me much so she made me quit, but I already speak Farsi quite well so I'm happy with that too, anyway to cut a long story short, there isn't much of a problem with learning a language everyone else is doing.

Although I would recommend Hindi or Chinese if you don't want to learn a European language.

I am doing Russian at GCSE level (along with two other languages) and while it is immensely hard and occassionally annoying (grammatically) it is a great language.
I'm definitely glad, despite having my moments, that I chose to learn the language. And written, it is beautiful : )

Mandarin, as China is the biggest emerging economy in the world. All countries are now and will be doing huge amounts of business with China and not many Westerners speak Mandarin.

You would find it easy to get a well paid job as a translator if you could speak Mandarin.

Since you've started learning German already and liked it then I'd continue with that if I were you, particularly since it's fairly widely spoken around Eastern Europe (certainly more so then English/French).

Learn a language that most people do not often learn! be creative in picking the language! I mean everyone is learning french, dutch, danish, arabic, german, spanish, greek etc. but what about Swahli? or other African languages, you want to stand out amonst the crowd!
Oh yes, a whole lot of use Swahili is going to be in the 21st century, what a complete waste of time thats going to be.

Learn Japanese, its quite a difficult but beautiful language so theres something to boast about. If you're interested in Japan then its obviously the way to go.

German or Japanese. They both open up great employment opportunities and Japanese isn't as difficult as you might think, I'm decent at it myself.
