I'll be there too.
At first I was very disappointed but adowa had a look at the residence and she said it's not that bad... so I hope she's right!

KCH was my 5th or 6th choice... I put it that high on my list because they have piano's and I love to play. So I hope the practice rooms are nice!

CU there!

Hey i'm going there...wasn't too happy about it at first but went to look around and its not that bad...its not modern but its clean and it has loads of communal areas...
Do a search!

Kings College Hall isn't too bad - it had a common room (with projector for films), a cool bar, Sky TV room, squash courts, table tennis, pool and full-size snooker table. The halls are split into three buildings, and in order of preference/niceness you want Platanes, Cameron, Danehurst. The actual atmosphere within the hall is awesome - because of the bar (and the mediocre food provided... apart from breakfast, which is quite nice) there is a massive social element not present at any of the other accommodation. You get to meet a lot more people, and mix with loads more people than just around your immediate room (which is the case at stamford and dover street, good luck meeting people outside your flat...).

The area itself isn't too bad. It's London. It *is* dangerous if you're not smart - but tell me a metropolitan area in the country that isn't anymore.

The are some great local places to go out - The Grove, The Sun and Doves, and believe it or not Brixton has some great night spots. A 24 hour sainsbury's is 2 minutes away from the halls, and is very handy for late night snack attacks.

When I was there there was no internet in rooms. There still isn't, but there is a computer room for everyone to use and there is wireless access in the common room for people to surf, it was installed 6 months after i left though. I had BT install a phoneline in my room, and i got myself 2mb bulldog broadband. I got myself a wireless router, and shared out my internet access to everyone in the corridor... i'd find people sitting outside my room at 3am as i walked to the bathroom in my boxers shorts.

Travelling into campus every day can be hassle. To get to london bridge/guys campus you have to get the train every day, which can take 15-20 minutes. Strand campus is reachable by train (train from denmark hill... walk from blackfriars - total travel time 25 mins) or on the bus, which quite frankly takes a stupid amount of time.

I arrived at KCH, and for the first few hours I thought "this is ****". As I got my computer and my hi-fi setup and bought some plants and posters and things my room looked brighter already. I went to dinner, didn't speak to anyone... went back to my room. Went over to the bar at 7pm, bought some drinks and from then I didn't look back. I have so many friends/mates now it's silly, and I really look back on my time at KCH fondly. I wouldn't have lived anywhere else, other than intercollegiate halls perhaps.

I hope that's helpful - KCH basically has some nice facilities, but it is quite far out from campus, and it isn't modern. But socially, it's ace.

Basically KCH is what you make of it. It has some nice facilities, so make the most of them - the bar, squash etc. Football club where we go out and play football in the park every sunday too (about 20-25 of us).

Hey don't take my word for gospel! :aetsch: Anyway i'm sure it'll be what you make it!
Here's another post by yours truly on KCH:-

People that don't get on well in the hall environments of Hampstead and KCH tend to be the type of people that aren't interested in socialising so much. You get out what you put in is probably the most apt piece of advice I can give anyone.

I was in KCH last year, and I'm sharing a flat this year. If it ever came down to it though, KCH would definitely be on my list of preferred accommodation, along with all the other halls. The "flats" like stamford and dover street would be way down my list, simply for the social aspect.
I'm in KCH! It was my first choice... ...but seen as I've lived in a portacabin - an extention to the house incl. bed - and a bad storm ripped the wooden door off its hinges...) for my final school year, I'm used to fairly squalid living conditions. And I really like it when people visit me in my room, and I can visit them in their rooms - at school I didn't get much breathing-space. So I'm going to make the best of my time at KCH, make and break friends (I avidly hope, don't want to be left friendless), and basically have fun!!!

PS: I don't consider myself much of a socialiser per se. I'll be the one sitting quietly for the first few hours, then as people approach me, I'll open up a great deal...

Lol, don't worry I'll be one of many joining you I think!
I'm terrified of not making friends; or at least "aquaintances".

How about I out myself to everyone? I'll stand up and say:

Hmmmm. Cough Cough. Harumph: "Ladies and Gentlemen............................. I am a member of :tsr: !"

It will have a deadening effect I would imagine. I'll be left grinning in the corner of the room like the fool I am  ...and nobody would approach me for at least a year and a half  :frown:

Believe it or not, my portacabin room was smaller than the rooms at KCH! Or at least the pics seem to convey that. And my room at home is barely bigger. But I'm small, so I'll manage  = 5'7

lol! i think we're all feeling the same....
I'll be attempting to bust into KCH at some point this year. We were up in the bar and at a few parties last year... even managed to kip in the common room lol.

I had a big 28" widescreen TV in my room along with my gamecube and DVD player etc it became a veritable social hub.

Some of my pics:-

I'm uploading my video mini tour of KCH too...
www.eek2.com/kch_tour.avi
it's about 2 minutes long and is 7.5MB
It's very brief, and I was just messing about with my old camera nearly 18 months ago now! It shows me walking down a corridor in Cameron building, across to the common room and then into Plats, briefly showing my friend Pete and then a standard (messy) room in Plats.

That sounds like a plan, lol

I'm terrified for the same reasons. Don't worry, Hardly anyone is going to know each other so we'll all be scrambling to get friends.

I'm going to look on Wednesday. I really hope they're not that bad. I don't know what I'll do...
Hmm...the pics from dazmanultra seem to show no carpet, and it doesn't look to be in great repair either. And boohoo for having to share. So what? A guy (maybe not a gal) can live without a carpet. Just wear shoes/slippers. Liven the room up; posters, your own bedding, bring a mat as on the pic. After a while you won't notice there aren't carpets, or care, because you'll be socialising most of the time

what building block did you stay in dazmanultra?

I personally think you're over exaggerating slightly...yes there's no carpet but as gengiskhan sed, just bring a mat! plus the desk and bed look ok..I think if you just put a personal touch to the room it'll be fine, i'm sure you were gonna do you're room up slightly whatever place you were allocated.

Mate, you don't live in halls to live a life of luxury. The first and foremost reason for living in halls is to make friends. KCH is whilst lacking aestetically and in home comforts is a great place to do this. Of course it's your choice, but all through university, and life in general *everything* is what you make of it.

Bring your own duvet, get some nice posters, maybe some plants... i even had a couple of inflatable chairs for friends to sit on... it really was great fun.

The food is pretty poor though, so you'll be wanting to buy snacks etc from the nearby 24 hours Sainsburys... but again, it's all part of the halls experience. Trekking to Sainsburys at 4am because you have the munchies lol.

Transport is also pretty good, Denmark Hill to Blackfriars is free most days... and takes 10 minutes to blackfriars, and the strand is then a 10 minute walk from there. London Bridge you have to pay for - they have ticket barriers.

This paragraph of what I said is incredibly pertinent:-

I'm not trying to sell it to anyone, it's just I want people not to write it off as a hellhole simply because it looks a bit rubbish from the outset, because it has a great social atmosphere, unlike any other halls simply because of the bar and the parties we had.
