I know The Junction and the Corn Exchange get some pretty decent bands, but I was wondering if there were places that local bands play or the DJs play more alternative stuff?

There are such places. There's an 'indiesoc' mailing list that gets sent out every week with a list of the gigs/clubs other things and there are regular club nights called Generator or The Indie Thing at a place called The Kambar.

Oh and also the Corn Exchange is pretty rubbish. It's very deep so if you're at the back on the top level thing you can't see anything.
