This is a bit off thread topic but I didn't want to start a thread just to ask this. Do invigilators check that calculators have no saved text (revision notes) on graphical calculators before the exam starts? I'm not planning on saving a load of stuff on it, but out of curiosity. (There are over 250 people in my college taking maths so just seeing how it would be possible as we're already made to wait over 35 minutes to be dismissed from the exam hall).

There are spot inspections. If you have anything on it, you will attain zero in that examination and could be prevented from taking any other examinations for up to 5 years.

My school gives each a sticker to tell the invigilators that your calculator is allowed. I never heard anyone who had their calculators checked, but well, I can't say that they will be like that.

So basically, everyone I know got a sticker, so they can pretty much get away with it even if they don't just make sure that the invigilator don't see it.

What about calculators like the Casio 'FX-83GT', these can convert reccuring decimals into fractions, these can come up as 3 mark questions in GCSE exams.. surely that goes against their regulations?

If they want to test that skill, they can ask that question on the non-calc paper.

Previously this hasn't been the case, especially in Edexcel Modular, it is very common to find reccuring decimals in Unit 2 Stage 2 (calculator allowed). Unless some form of working is always required, I can't understand how it'd work. This same calculator can calculate means from frequency tables, and (I think) Standard Deviation.

Well that is the current published Edexcel list. You can read the regulations for yourself on the JCQ website if you wish. Scientific calculators have been able to calculate standard deviation for as long as I can remember.

THIS is why our school uses exam stationery packs, supplied by the exam office, left in the exam room, containing ALL exam stationery required for any exam.

    Including a Casio FX-85ES calculator.

You can't use any calculator in C1 - its not allowed, non-calc paper.

    Re: The Banned Calculator List
Couldnt this be solved by candidates given a standard calculator by the invigilators already on the desk or something. That means everyone is then on a level playing field. Would be easier i think than checking everyones calculator

They're fine; I've got a FX-991ES PLUS myself. Love it.

Idiot friend of mine threw my bag over a fence and smashed it up, I had it replaced within the week - that's how much I love it. Godsend for people like me who make stupid mistakes all the time and need to check work. (Or use it to factorise equations because it takes me forever otherwise)

I got the plus because IMO it looks nicer and it does a couple of things the ES doesn't do. If you've already got the old one, keep it.
