Re: Protein only diet for weight lossThey're spammers for a weightloss company. I've reported them, they will be banned soon.(Original post by mikestraws)
Why are you bumping 2 year old threads!?!? -
Re: Protein only diet for weight lossNot really. Most people aren't just concerned with brutal weight loss - otherwise, they would take a chainsaw and cut their legs off. People generally want to a) lose fat b) retain muscle c) stay healthy and d) feel as good as possible whilst they are doing it.(Original post by Lightf00t)
Only calories matter where weight-loss is concerned.
The people calling me dumb are arguing with basic thermodynamics.
Mind you, I have found that generally fitness fanatics and bodybuilders spout pseudo-scientific guff.
If you care about all four points (which the majority of people losing weight do) then you also care about what you eat rather than just focusing on the amount. Of course you can lose weight by eating 1000 calories of protein shake a day (brb ****ting my guts out even thinking about it) or even 1000 calories of donuts but for the majority of people - it just isn't optimal or healthy.Last edited by Mark85; 04-10-2012 at 14:43. -

Re: Protein only diet for weight loss
Yes, it would make her lose body fat but it wouldn't be very healthy for her. She'll feel weak and she won't have much energy. Also, when she feels like she lost enough weight and wants to go on a normal diet again, her body would gain more weight in order to try to catch up to what it has lost, so overall she'll gain more weight than she lost.
The recommended amounts of carbohydrates is 45-65%, Proteins 10-35% and fats 20-35% of the total energy.
If she wants to lose calories then she should reduce the amount of food she eats and exercise more, but still keep those proportions the same for a healthy diet. -
Re: Protein only diet for weight lossSo true. But if they won't believe you they'll spout some "scientific study" sponsored by these protein companies saying you'll need 2 grams of protein for every pound of weight.(Original post by Lightf00t)
The average person in Britain gets more than enough protein. Protein shakes are unnecessary, although they do make lots of money for the companies which sell them by exploiting thick people's gullibility.
In making people believe they need loads of protein they'll get more people buying their meal replacements powders. -
Re: Protein only diet for weight lossYou do realise that people generally buy protein shakes because they are generally the cheapest source of protein?(Original post by Lightf00t)

Whey powder is essentially portable sugar free dehydrated milk.
Are people who buy milk 'thick' and 'gullible'? -
Re: Protein only diet for weight lossPretty different from pharma companies sponsoring studies that test the efficacy of their medicines?(Original post by canyouhelpme)

Re: Protein only diet for weight lossThe companies that make these protein powders sponsor studies to back up their claims that people need loads of protein, thus ensuring people buy their powders so that they get enough protein.(Original post by cowsforsale)

Wut
Try it yourself. I have gained as much eating 60g of protein a day as I did when I was eating 200g a day.
Its a big lie that you need so much protein to build muscle. -
Re: Protein only diet for weight lossNo they sponsor studies to test out a particular hypothesis, which is peer reviewed before it is published to try and eliminate any bias or whatever. They might sensationalise their results, but it is up to you, me whoever as the consumer to do some background reading before forking out money.(Original post by canyouhelpme)

You'd do this with a phone, a tv so why not with a supplement? And for what it's worth, considering you're a young healthy person who works out frequently, i doubt you're only getting 60g of protein since it's even lower than the rda which is for sedentary folk. -
Re: Protein only diet for weight lossWell what about their studies which show muscle will catabolise if you don't have protein every 3 hours? Or the rubbish that the body can only digest 30g of protein an hour?(Original post by cowsforsale)

And the rda protein for a sedentary male is 45g, 60g is more than 45g mate. -
Re: Protein only diet for weight lossExactly(Original post by canyouhelpme)
Well what about their studies which show muscle will catabolise if you don't have protein every 3 hours? Or the rubbish that the body can only digest 30g of protein an hour?
And the rda protein for a sedentary male is 45g, 60g is more than 45g mate.
RDAs are aimed at those whose ideal physique is that of an average skinny fat mess. -

Also, the most jacked/strongest people on the planet eat a metric **** ton of meat and not a lot else. Go figure. -
Re: Protein only diet for weight lossHow could you be skinny fat eating the rda? You can't become fat without eating too many calories. Yes you may not have an ideal physique, but you wouldn't be skinny fat without eating too much.(Original post by Scoobiedoobiedo)
Exactly

As for pics at your request:

Re: Protein only diet for weight lossThe most jacked/strongest are also on steroids. Correlation does not imply causation. So for the average man who works out they need the same amount of food?(Original post by Old School)
What Scoobie said.

Go out and experiment for yourself. Eat less protein and see what happens. -

"The RDA is 55.5g for men aged 19-50 and 53.3g for men aged over 50. For women the RDA is 45g for those aged 19-50 and 46.5g for over-50s."And the rda protein for a sedentary male is 45g, 60g is more than 45g mate.
The following table lists the DVs based on a calorific intake of 2,000 calories, for adults and children four or more years of age.
Go on then, tell me more about your training methodology mate.
Actually don't. Stop talking ****e.
