Warwick rankings; the Independent 2011

Just took a look at this. Of course there is no point wasting too much energy on league tables, and you can find flaws in a matter of seconds just by looking at them. Nevertheless, generally it was really good:

Overall 7, but IMO we should be before St Andrews and Durham

Economics, Maths, Finance, Management, History, American studies, English Lit., etc. are really strong. Most other subjects are in a comfortable top 10 position.

BUT

WTF with law? Just by looking at the entry standards you can see that it is an undeserved 19th position. Oh well, we'll get 'em next year.

I think below Oxbridge and specialists like LSE and Imperial - St Andrews, Durham, UCl and Warwick are pretty much all the same ball park, the order isn't really consequential. Console yourself that we have the third highest number of departments 1st for their subject (even if it is only 4) behind Oxbridge, and that Eng department is up from 7th to 5th.

You can't really worry when your doing an economics based subject at Warwick anyway.

Oh Hai Paddy. Yeah those rankings are awful.
Lol that ranking always fails. Lancaster students will now begin quoting this all the time like UCL students trying to say they are 4th in the world ¬¬ yay.

Aye, rankings fail so much. Noone looks at them except students looking for ways to tell people how great their uni is.

And the London Metropolitan University featured for the first time in any ranking. Needless to say it did ****
What?! Bristol 16th?! GTFO. Now. We are not amused. Worst. Rankings. Evah.

And just as I predicted a few years back, Exeter was always a bubble university and couldn't ride the success-wave for longer than a year. Same will happen to Lancaster, mark my words

That's the problem really. We shouldn't be able to teleport up the rankings so easily. But because the rankings are stupid, everyone moves around drastically every year. Does anyone really think that a year is really enough time to propel a university from 19th to 3rd?

In the Guardian it's 7th. It just never makes sense anyway. (Edit: Warwick Law)

Why not? It's representative of the university in one year, not a trend over a number of years. If a uni restructures the way its financed and/or gets investment and its service/facilities spend increases dramatically, if it get a particularly good student satisfaction score, if they hire more staff - all these could change between the yearly league table and see a sudden rise.
Its just stats, weighting and criteria - people can complain that the stats don't reflect what they feel to be true, but at the end of the day you can't really argue with the maths.
