Hello prospective comrades.

What is it that makes the University of Leeds stand out for you? Why did/have you decide to study/apply there? Is it a highly respected university?

I had not previously given it much thought, but after visiting the university and reading up on it, I am giving it some serious consideration.

For me it was: amazing city with lots to do, great campus, great SU, course lookings really interesting.

I recognise you from the politics forums. What do you want to do as a career, are you interested in getting into working in politics? If so Leeds is very good for that quite a few of my coursemates are in political jobs with Labour/Lib Dems/NUS. The 4 year Politics & Parliamentary Studies course is superb for getting connections, with its placement opportunities on your year out in Ottawa/Washington and Westminster.

As regards why Leeds in general, just to summarise some of the main plus points:

- The Uni is generally well run and you know things like accommodation, library facilities, gym are very impressive. The gym used to be a bit cramped and small but its superb now.
- Uni accommodation for 1st years is of a high standard and you are well looked after by the accommodation office.
- Private accommodation for 2nd/3rd years is plentiful and easy to find and if you know what you're doing and shop around you can get a good place for £55 a week or so.
- You don't need a car and in a lot of places don't even need the bus you can walk around Leeds easily, but the buses are good anyway.
- As a city to live, shop and socialise its pretty good value compared to most other cities in the UK
- It's a fairly compact city in terms of geographical area but there is a lot on which makes it good socially
- It is a very sport focused city: Leeds Utd, Leeds Rhinos, Leeds Tykes, Yorkshire cricket. Even if you are not a big sports fan but want to go once or twice to a sporting event its quite good value for money to go to Headingley for cricket or rugby league with a student card
- Crime is not bad, there is a bit of opportunist robbery when students have parties and invite randoms gatecrashers in, or leave windows wide open etc, but on the whole I've never felt threatened or unsafe in Leeds
- Lots of young people, as well as students there are a lot of ex students who stay around as graduates.
