The Student Room Group
The university will let you know which books to buy for your course and different lecturers/seminar leaders prefer different books.

As for prep, don't think there is much you can do, however some people do like reading some books on the way the law generally operates - one that is always recommended (which I haven't read myself) is the 'Law Machine' by Glanville Williams.

The jump from A-level to University is quite different. You are far more independent and have free reign as to how to spend your time. Also, you are not spoonfed information and you have to decide what to select as relevant from your reading based on some general guidelines given to you by your seminar/course leader.

Good luck anyhow.

The Oxford Handbook of Criminology is a good starting point for criminology - its massive but really good for essays and references etc
