All ethical studies require clearance for:

a. animals
b. people
c. drugs

is age a continounus variable aswell?
Generally, if you're wanting to work with children or sensitive groups, you will require a CRB check. You do not need to be over 21.

What do you mean by a literature review? Like a meta-analysis? If so, yes.

Yes, age is a continuous variable. Think about it. You can be 18 years old, or 18 years and 1 day, or 18 years and 26 hours, or 18 years and 26 hours, 2 minutes, seconds, miliseconds etc

If you want to conduct a research into kids or work with kids, do you have to be over 21 or do you need a criminal record check?

secondly, is a literature review an example of a true research study?

Finally, is a problem with conducting open questions that its difficult to create graphs and charts based on results?

CRB checks depend on the policy of the institution you wish to conduct research with/for. It's more than likely that you will need a CRB check if the research involves coming into contact with young people and vulnerable adults. However, this is not always the case, since sometimes being escorted by somebody with a CRB check is enough (as long as you are not left alone in a room with children/vulnerable adults - depending of policy).

You will almost certainly not be required to undergo a CRB check for a literature review (unless that review contains sensitive information such as names and addresses etc).

Whether or not a literature review constitutes a piece of research depends on your field of study and your definition of research. Doctoral degrees (PhDs, DPhils, etc - which are research degrees) are awarded to researchers in fields such as Philosophy and English, however neither of these fields have much in the way of traditional empirical enquiry.

Creating graphs and charts can be done with any data. The issue is whether or not such visual representations add anything to the data analysis (and whether or not such representation contradicts the methodological assumptions that guide data analysis). Software such as Atlas.ti and NVivo are qualitative data management tools that allow you to generate complex visualisations, however these visualisations have to be interpreted (which is the hard part).

The questions I posted above were from a research methods test. It said one of the drawbacks of using open question was:

- no predtermined answers
- Difficult to create graphs and charts

The CRB question was just about children, so you dont have to be 18 right?

would a problem of using questionnaires be that you can't control the environment in which they are answered by people.

Would studies within participants in an ethical study require verbal agreement or informed consent, it would be verbal agreement right?

There may be no predetermined answers in the sense that you cannot predict the answers, but what you are referring to depends on the nature of the interview questions (open questions can be structured, semi-structured or without structure, i.e. exploratory questions used in grounded theory).

It isn't difficult to create graphs and charts, but it may be difficult to create meaningful graphs and charts that represent the nature of the data.

I don't know about the CRB age issue. Some first year university students have to have a CRB check (so they would be 18), but I don't know if this applies to 17 year olds. I suspect that there could be a clause about people over 16 needing them in certain circumstances, but I don't know for sure. Teenagers commit atrocious crimes against children, so there is a need for proper background checks.

If you are looking for answers to an undergraduate (first year?) test, then the two points you make are relevant. However, if you were a social scientist PhD student or university researcher then your answers are too simple and need unpacking.

Which university are you studying at? Informed consent means that the research participant understands the nature of the study and how the data will be used (etc). A verbal agreement is a type of consent that research participant gives (but this consent can be verbal, and can informed).
I've always been taught that a literature review is a bit of a cop-out for a 'study' as it doesn't really involve doing anything that anyone else couldn't do.

By open ended questions do you mean quali research and/or thematic analysis? I'm a bit confused as to what you're doing.
For my dissertation I tried to work with someone related to a sensitive issue = it fell through! The ethics committee were also being a bunch of wazzucks and my tutor kept me in the dark about the whole thing!

My advice - if its something you have a burning desire to do - then go for it. But if it's something you not really fussed or can think of other avenues = seriously do something else. I am not trying to put you off, I am just speaking from experience, it was an utter nightmare and in the end I changed my dissertation slightly to avoid doing work with a vulnerable adult.
so to work with children what day do you have to be?
Say you are a care worker would you need crb clearanece or be over 21 to work with children?

say you are conducting research using children would you need crb clearance or be over 21 to work with children?
