Oxbridge Endowment vs. Ivy League Endowment
Why is it that US Universities have such large endowments (usually through fundraisers by alumni and monetary gifts etc) more so then UK Universities, especially the prestigious ones, do their alumni give back to their universities?

Even my undergrad alma mater, which is not as prestigious as Harvard etc, has a large endowment, so much so, that they are opening a medical school in the fall...

    Thoughts?

US Ivy league endowments were mainly created in the last 30 years through fund raising efforts among the alumnii. UK universities only recently began with such campaigns. I think Cambridge raised a billion by campaigning some 3 years ago and Oxford are aiming (or have already, dunno) to raise 1.25bn.

I'd guess that it's simply because there's far more money in the top US universities than the top UK ones, and probably in general for the better unis out there. The US being 'home' to so much more money than the UK and everything.

Just glancing over their wiki pages Oxford has an endowment of around $7.5bn compared with Harvard's $25.5bn.

Also there's an entirely different culture of giving in the US. It's just not as common in the UK. Americans, on the whole, give a lot more generously.

The lack of fundraising campaigns is also significant.

Then why are they crying poverty? And why not offer the students that come from disadvantaged backgrounds, free/reduced tuition that a lot of US universities (Ivy League or not) provide to members of their student body?

If their alumni love their universities so much and value all the open doors as a result of the degree then why not show their support by donating to the university?
