Start looking as soon as you get in leeds, if not earlier, im sure the siansburys i work at in city centre will have jobs going. Other places will probably be looking for crimbo temps soon and they might go on to be permanent jobs.

In my first year of uni i was fine for money though, but spent it all, and my overdraft so needed to get a job, i do like 12 hours a week so it doesn't interfere to much.

Boots are already hiring xmas temps in a lot of stores. The time to begin applying is now, September is the main month for hiring in the run up to christmas.

I’m in the same financial situation as the OP. I’ll get the full grant, and the bursary, and I’ll have about 2k which I have saved up over the past year with my part time job. But I’m still planning to get a job; I’m trying to get a transfer as I work in a restaurant chain and will want to do a maximum of 12 hours a week over 1 or 2 shifts. As this will pay for my food and socialising bills!! It will probably mean I have more money for the second/third year where it’s more important to work hard on your course!! I personally don’t think 1 or 2 shifts in the week will hinder anything!!
Go to Joblink in the student union, if you start looking at the start of term not as many other students will be. I don't understand why people say you shouldn't work in 1st year, save that for 2nd and 3rd year.....you do know that 2nd and 3rd year is when your marks count....?

Personally, i don't understand why people would not want to work during any year because it gives you somethign to do, gives you extra money and means that while everybody is skint by the end of xmas, you are living it up out every day.
Apply at McDonalds lol :P
