Re: Royal Holloway General Chat ThreadYou could always book a campus tour.(Original post by NapoleonDynamite)
Im planning on going to RH again over the summer and have another look round. The next open day isn't until the start of the term so I was wondering if it's OK to go to the uni anyway and walk around?
That's what I did. I'm not sure if they're still doing them (due to Olympics) but the tours are every Wednesday 2pm.

Re: Royal Holloway General Chat ThreadI believe campus tours only happen during term time (though anyone correct me if I'm wrong!) I only say that because, as a Student Ambassador, I haven't had any emails about campus tours for a while, so it seems to me as though they are a term time only thing.(Original post by live_a_life)

Re: Royal Holloway General Chat ThreadI think everyone's 'automatically' a member of the SU unless you choose to opt out (though in that case I don't know why they're asking people to tick a box, haha) but no, you don't have to be a member of the SU. You do, however, have to pay to join clubs and societies, and obviously to gain entry into the SU on nights out. Being a member of the SU just means that you can go to general meetings (such fun!) and things like that.(Original post by _becca)
Do you have to pay to join the Students Union? I ticked yes to join and it hasn't asked for money... yet... haha -
Re: Royal Holloway General Chat ThreadThank you! Could I ask you another question? I'm in Founders - what will I be likely to be paying for? e.g. do I need to buy a TV license, pay for Wifi, cleaning clothes? How much do these cost? Will I be able to bring a kettle/toaster etc, or will I even need to? (I know it's catered but would be nice to have tea in my own room(Original post by llacerta)

Maybe they changed it to opt in so nobody who breaks a rule can say they never signed up to the rules.(Original post by llacerta)

Re: Royal Holloway General Chat ThreadTechnically, if you want to watch live TV you have to buy a TV licence. (Whether you actually do so is another issue entirely...) I think a TV licence costs around £120 ish? I might be lying, it's definitely over £100, but I can't remember exactly how much it is.(Original post by _becca)

Internet is free in halls, thankfully! As for washing clothes, you'll need to go to a laundry room (the one for Founder's residents is located behind the Santander, next to the college shop). It's been a while since I've done my washing in halls, but I believe it costs something like £2 to wash and a £1 to dry (or vice versa...)
In your pantry in Founder's you will be provided with a kettle and toaster, as well as a fridge and microwave, I believe, so you won't need to bring anything like that with you. -

Re: Royal Holloway General Chat ThreadThat's actually quite plausible, I think! I remember going to a GM in which it was discussed that some were annoyed that they hadn't even officially 'agreed' to the SU's rules, so yeah, maybe that's why.(Original post by gm15)

Re: Royal Holloway General Chat ThreadSo will you be starting 2nd or 3rd year in September? For which subject? I just completely fell in love with it when I visited!! I live in Oxford so the architecture and grounds just felt so much like home that I didn't want to leave(Original post by llacerta)
Same here, can't wait to go back!
Just bought a ticket for a London night on the Friday of Freshers', SO EXCITED. Squeeee! WHY ISN'T IT SEPTEMBER NOW.
Gonna be a great few years.
Could I ask another couple of questions please?
how did you find sorting out houses etc for 2nd year? How soon do you need to choose people and locations? Also, how much money on average do you reckon people spend in freshers' week? I'd planned to track my spending for the first few weeks to see how much I'll need to withdraw but then I realised Freshers will probably be a bank breaker aha!

Re: Royal Holloway General Chat ThreadI'm going to be a third year, a finalist, in September. Can't believe how quickly the time has flown! I study psychology- what are you going to be studying? I love Oxford too, and I can see why you felt at home at Holloway.(Original post by _becca)

Nine times out of ten there's drama sorting out houses for second year, but it often works out okay in the end. Me and my flatmates did what most freshers did, which was panic about getting houses, so we signed up to one by Christmas. In reality, though, you don't need to rush that much, and it's better to take your time and live with the right people than sign up to a contract with some friends who you think you know well, but more than likely do not. The letting agents try and make everyone sign up to houses ASAP, saying things like "all the best ones will be gone!" but it's really not true. The SU had a campaign last academic year (so after I'd already moved into my second year house), something like keep calm, don't sign, just to calm everyone down a bit.
Hmm, that's a difficult one...I don't think I actually spent that much in Freshers' in first year (though I'm certainly planning to go out with a bang!) It doesn't have to be very expensive, depends how much you're planning to drink and whether you want to go to London and so on. If you incorporate a London trip, I'd budget maybe £50 for that night, perhaps £100 for Freshers' overall? Might have to factor in a few takeaways as well, haha. -
Re: Royal Holloway General Chat ThreadI saw it last night......I have to confess to getting a little too excited over Masterchef due to being at RHULL! (I lead a sheltered life)(Original post by llacerta)
Anyone else watching Royal Holloway on Celebrity Masterchef right now? Amazing.
