Looking at past papers we often get asked 'Suggest a suitable catalyst for this reaction'. I know a few but I'm hazy on the rest. Any help would be appreciated.

Catalytic converter - Platinum and Rhodium
    Isomerisation - Platinum

Some more catalysts are NICKEL, PHOSPHORIC ACID and Conc. SULPHURIC ACID, but I get confused over what reactions these catalyse.

Could anyone clear things up for me please?

conc acid is definitely used in esterification process

i think they used phosphoric acid usually for dehydration process, or sometimes it is used as hydration of an alkene, ie add H and OH across a double bond.

nickel is in the same group as Pt and Pd and i can certainly see them being used the same way, i think they use this for hydrogenation too

catalytic converter used mostly the elements from the "catalyst block", some of which you mention above

    Reforming - Platinum and Iridium
Cracking - Silicon and Al oxide
    Isomerisation - Hot platinum

    Hydrogenation - Nickel at 150 C
    Oxidation - K2CR2O7
    Esterification - general acid catalyst?
    Dehydration - Hot concentrated sulfuric
Hydration - phosphoric acid at 300C and 6MPa
