African Hairdressers

I dunno if I made a thread before but is there a good selection of African hairdressers/shops with reasonable prices up there?

:woo:
What do African hairdressers do that regular ones do not?

African hair is very different to European or even Asian hair so they are more specialised.

The african ones relax hair and do braids and stuff that the regualr ones don't do.

African hairdressers in Newcastle! You must be barking mad. Didn't you know Newcastile is "hideously white".....apparently.

An ad here (don't know how credible it is, clearly a self-employed person)

I know they aren't "African hairdresses" but a few "alternative" hairdresses might be worth looking at. Altered States for example

No they put a cream with chemicals in it and treat it also called a perm. If I went to a normal hairdresser they wouldn't know what to do with my hair.

When I went for the Open Day I noticed only one African hairdressers which was inside the precinct. It wasn't like a household name like some but it was the only evidence I saw.

Obviously it depends what you're after but if you're that desperate maybe you could find a friend that can do braids or other styles you want as a favour? with relaxing i understand it's different and you don't want just anyone to relax your hair so i'm not sure what to suggest tbh...

I dont relax my hair that's why I need one, otherwise I'd just do it myself. My hair isn't very good. I just want a hairdresser who's good and reasonably priced.

Thank you for the info. I want to jsut put my hair in locks because my course will take me to to China which will just be even more tragic.

Quite. But it is overwhelmingly white for a major city.

I'm just quoting a Labour MP who caused a bit of controversy when he said Newcastle was "disgustingly white". I think he used disgustingly. Quite shocking really, I wonder what the reaction would've been if he'd said Notting Hill was "disgustingly black"....

Like all cities, it has its racial diversity. Quite a Chinese population, with a Chinatown. South Asian, especially in the inner west, and Gateshead has one of the most concentrated Jewish populations in the world. South Sheilds has one of the first, and largest, Yemeni communities.

But at 93% white, it's probably the least diverse of all major cities. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing.

Interesting fact: Newcastle has the largest percentage of Bolivians in the country (1% of total city population).

Aw I'm so sad. This is tragic. So no where in Newcastle has anyone seen an African hairdressers.

As a local, perhaps I am bias but my understanding is that: Newcastle has always been portrayed as a stereotypical, white, working class city. Said generalisation is not exactly untrue.
It is quite unlike London, Bradford and Birmingham etc. in that there has been little immigration. I don't think that is particularly based on intolerance but simply down to a lack of opportunities, be it economically or otherwise, drawing in new populations. The majority of Scotland is pretty similar in terms of racial diversity. I am not sure that it detracts from the city it just gets annoying if you are looking for specialist goods.

However, there has been a notably change in the past 10 years and certain areas are becoming gradually more populated by Bangladeshi and African Immigrants. I would suggest checking out hairdressers in Benton and Fenham as they are most likely to cater to non-white residents. I have an afro and do find it difficult to get the necessary hair products, I tend to rely on the internet. All this aside though, Newcastle is, for the most part, a really friendly city and I hope you have a great time up here =)
