*MEGATHREAD* - The Ultimate 'Am I Good Enough For Medicine?' Angst Thread Mk II
Discussion about medicine applications and medicine.

Re: The Ultimate 'Am I Good Enough For Medicine?' Angst Thread Mk IIWhat was the C in? As long as you apply carefully (avoid universities which have higher GCSE requirements) you'll be fine. You have a wealth of experience and extra curriculars but bear in mind that none of us are admission tutors so we can't really comment on your chances based on that(Original post by AroosaHashmi2010)
GCSEs: 1.5 A* 9A 2B 1C
AS Levels: AABBB but resat to get AAAAA
A2 predictions: AAAB with a B in Biology but I'm hoping to lift this up to 4 As.
Work Expo/Volunteering/Extracurricular:
-1 week Chemist, volunteering in nursing home for elderly/stroke victims/those suffering from Dementia, volunteered as clinical assistant in Hospital Clinics, shadowed nurses, cardiologist, orthopaedic doctors, general surgery, EMT, maxillo facial, etc.
-3 weeks in South Africa volunteering in schools and orphanage with infants affected by HIV/AIDS crisis.
-1 week in Bosnia volunteering as part of interfaith work and visited hospital, spoke with senior cardiologist of hospital.
-DofE Bronze, Gold in 50,000m rowing challenge twice, organise charity events, Social Committee member, Prefect, Sixth-form Magazine co-editor, V50 award, Level 1 and 2 Womens Community sports leadership award, Level 1 Volunteering award, School sports leader, assisted in running girls community youth club, Open University Module.
I couldn't apply for 2012 entry as my predicted grades weren't high enough (Damn you Biology -.-) and does anyone think I have a decent chance- I'm worried if I do apply for the next cycle my GCSEs will pull me really down. Any ideas on what to do? :/ Danke Schon!
Just make sure when it comes to writing your statement, you are reflective on your experiences.

Re: The Ultimate 'Am I Good Enough For Medicine?' Angst Thread Mk IIThank you so muchh!(Original post by zhang599)
From the time I sent off my application for volunteering to me actually getting a place took like 6 months for my hospital...took so long! :P And yeah I told them I wanted to do medicine and when I started I asked them if I would get a reference at the end of my placement and they told me how many hours/length of time I needed to do
Arghh, I better start now then :L

Which universities favour those with good as/alevels and dont use GCSEs as much
Im a reapplicant and last year i think that one the main errors in my application was that i was not careful enough in choosing my universities. My grades are as follows
GCSE: A*AAAAABBBBB
As levels: AAAA (maths, bio, chem, physics)
MY predicted grades are A*AAA (A* in bio) however i think that im on track to get atleast one more A* (if im lucky)
So yeah i guess im asking this a little early but i was just curious. Could anybody help pweez?

Re: Which universities favour those with good as/alevels and dont use GCSEs as muchBarts would be a good choice because they love lots of subjects at A level and even better if a few A*s are chucked in. Peninsula also always interview applicants with their achieved grades.(Original post by bssjonny)

Your GCSEs aren't that bad, have a look at the GCSE requirements of medical schools
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki...E_Requirements
Just avoid those which blatantly have a high demand of GCSE grades (e.g. Birmingham and Oxbridge) -
Re: Which universities favour those with good as/alevels and dont use GCSEs as much
Well, There are a few universities which dont really consider GCSE for medicine such as Brighton medical school..... However they do have basic requirements, which is minimum of 'B' grade in both english language and mathematics. Hope this helped you. Btw i am studying GCSE at the moment. next year i intend to study same subjects
-
Re: Which universities favour those with good as/alevels and dont use GCSEs as muchSome medical schools ask for a minimum but in reality only consider those with with much more competitive grades, BSMS is one of those(Original post by elsher)

...if it's uni in general, your best shots are Warwick, UCL, and Imperial (given that you didn't re-take modules). I'm afraid you might get cut in Oxbridge, but you still have amazing grades.Last edited by BLu_REdEmTiON; 23-05-2012 at 19:22. -
Re: TSR Med Students' Society Part IVYes as long as it's not part of your three main A level i.e. you have AAAE with As in Biology,Chemistry and another subject.(Original post by rival_)
Med students is it ever possible to get in medicine with an E at maths A level? -

after resitting some AS exams, best thing I've ever done, I don't regret it at all. I'd look into Manc with all your voluntary experience (depends on a decent UKCAT) but double check if you meet all their subject requirements like is your English language at least a B?
Also Queens Belfast rank your UKCAT with your, GCSEs if you're in year 13 or you're achieved A levels if you're a gapper. So if you get AAA and apply next year they'll give you the same amount of points as someone in year 13 with 9A*s
look into it.
Avoid Leicester definitely. Look into Leeds if you can write a decent personal statement as they love a variety of different interests which you have (major Leeds lover here
).

Re: The Ultimate 'Am I Good Enough For Medicine?' Angst Thread Mk II
Can anyone help me out?
What university won't look too harshly on at a B in AS maths? Provided A's in other three subjects (chemistry, bio and sociology)? I'm thinking taking those 3 onto A2 and drop maths. My Gcse's are 6A* (physics, maths chem, english lit, english lang, philosophy) , 4A's(history, french, bio, business) and I think strong point on my application would be volunteering and work experience and extra curriculars. Also doing an EPQ medicine related (hull york respect that I've read?) I think I'd prefer an intgrated course, but probably not PBL. What university would be good to apply to my strengths?
Thank you guys
-
Re: The Ultimate 'Am I Good Enough For Medicine?' Angst Thread Mk IIMost medical schools won't really care about a B in Maths if it is your dropped subject. Your GCSEs are good enough for any medical school apart from (Oxford, Birmingham and Kings(this can be offset by a good UKCAT)). You do have quite a wide choice so which universities do you want to apply to?(Original post by TaraBelle)

leicester (I know that they look at top 6 GCSE's on a scoring system, but I have an A in bio so I won't get top scores there)
nottingham
brighton and sussex
bristol
sheffield
and maybe leeds/manchester, but I prefer the course at the others. Which ones would you say I've got a good shot at?
thank you for the help

Re: The Ultimate 'Am I Good Enough For Medicine?' Angst Thread Mk IIBSMS and Bristol are very heavy on personal statement and Bristol doesn't have an entrance exam so the competition is pretty fierce. I think Leicester is a good choice if you have a decent UKCAT score to match. No idea about Nottingham medicine admissions sorry(Original post by TaraBelle)

Sheffield is a good choice too because you fit their GCSE requirements and they didn't seem to care much about the UKCAT this year but that may change. Leeds is massively over subscribed so I personally wouldn't risk applying there but that's entirely up to you. The medical schools you mentioned all to some extent place emphasis on the personal statement when selecting for interview so it's hard to judge how good of a shot you have. If you had a high UKCAT score would you consider one of the universities which operate a cut off score, say Newcastle or Peninsula for instance?

Re: The Ultimate 'Am I Good Enough For Medicine?' Angst Thread Mk IIYeah I suppose I just need to be wise when making the uni choices, and the C was in Graphics so hopefully it won't affect my it THAT much, and thanks for replying!(Original post by myyrh)
