Urgh, I know right! I mean it's like I'm paying £10.50 per hour and being taught by this ridiculously weedy man. I mean the man is a liabilty, the other day he chastised me for going too qucikly and as soon as my lesson ends and he drives off, he punctures the ******* tyres. And I am paying out of my own money since my parents didn't want me to get driving lessons in the first place! URGH!!! Sometimes I come out of that car and just feel like going all Rambo on his ass :mad2:

£10.50 an hour is sooo cheap. i was paying £22.. and i paid for my own
and it took me 20 hours of lessons to pass...
I get mine for free cos my uncle's a driving instructor. Though, I may have to start paying soon, cos I'm not very good at driving, lol :erm:. The prices are understandable, driving schools are a business and the instructors have gotta have a living somehow. Plus, what everyone else said, I'm not bothered to repeat.

Theres the cost of the car and it's modifications. The insurance is higher than normal as it's specialist. There is likely to be more maintenance due to learners not being able to drive right.

Also think about how far you might drive in the average hour lesson. Might be as much as 15 or 20 miles. If the car, while being driven somewhat uneconomically, does say 40MPG you're looking at about £2.50 just for the petrol. Take out the other costs and the instructor might see...what? About £13 out of the 20 (just guessing).

Then remember they'll be paying tax on their earnings too. Hardly making oodles of cash for nothing.

Srsly WTF?! :lolwut:

It's not exactly an in demand skill; driving. Loads of adults can do it. You can get advanced violin tuition for the same price as driving lessons. Whyyyyy?

Why is your love so expensive?

If you include fuel, insurance and everything else its about 50p per mile even for a small car.
Took me 23 to pass, I could have passed in 18 I reckon but due to a 6 week waiting list for tests and I forgot to book it took a few more.

Eh because it's an essential skill that you SHOULD learn, even if you don't plan on getting a car.

Unlike the viola....

Anyway, you don't need that many lessons. take around 10, and 2 before your test.

The rest of the time take out your parents car for a drive and learn the clutch control on there.

People who need driving lessons can't drive.
People who can't drive are more likely to have accidents.
People who are more likely to have accidents pay high insurance.
People who pay high insurance need to get the money from somewhere.

Thus expensive driving lessons.

Don't complain. In Spain they're about 50€ per hour (sometimes they say 40€ per 45 min lesson, so it's even more expensive). And salaries here are much lower and also petrol (about 95p per litre, i.e. 1.1&#8364:wink: is lower. Besides, there are theory classes, theory exams, no learner permit at all, so the total expenditure on the licence, provided you pass everything in your first chance, you may spend about 1200€/1400€ on average, and then you have to put your L-plate (once you already have your full licence, again) for a year.

Edit: Needless to say, I am starting to consider seriously taking my lessons and getting my licence in Britain, and not in Spain. Besides I'd learn to drive with a RHD car (i.e. driving on the left), and it'd be cheaper. What else?

By the time I take my test, I'll probably have spent over £1000 on lessons. Lost count of how many hours I've done now, it's definitely over 30.

Yeah, if you don't have the innate ability to drive, you don't deserve to drive at all.

If they're both £20, I would say instrument tuition is the one that's EXTREMELY overpriced. Driving - it's a car, petrol, instruction, potentially could end in death or car destruction. Advanced violin, someone watching you play and helping you..

I think I pay the most out of any UK learners on here - 24 quid... :frown:
My instructor must be good though, or i must be a decent driver because I was driving on the roads on my first lesson, and think i'm doing well so far (after 4 lessons)

I don't know why they're so expensive  ... takes the piss really, he doesn't even seem to pay that much attention (it is funny when he gets his toy cars out and shows me techniques though :yep: )

Because they're in huge demand and many people don't have any alternative!

My instructor insisted on following a strict plan which, you guessed it, racked up the hours and emptied my wallet. Passed first time though so I guess it was worth it.

Driving lessons can never prepare you for the real thing though. Like watching porn.

To stop black people from deprived areas learning to drive and then committing drive-bys.

Hey, watch out, I know where you live, and you might see me strolling around in my stolen Ka, with an AK-47 on full load, pointing right at you

Spoiler

If you ever tried teaching a woman to drive, you'd want generous renumeration.
As others have said about the costs of running a car.

Apparently insurance for a Driving Instructor is 'significantly' less than what you would expect, it does kind of make sense, as essentially there are two people driving the car, one of which is incredibly advanced and has completed all the relevant courses.

They do seem quite expensive though... But everything relating to cars is bloody expensive! I've got car tax to pay by the end of this month, £180! WHAT?! It's only a bloody Renault Clio
