Re: Can you specify a single university if you apply to just one?I'd be surprised if there really was only one option for you in these circumstances, but even if that is the case, I would advise against mentioning the uni in your PS. You just might change your mind about the course you want to do, or find other choices you want to add in, and you can't change your PS once it has been submitted. Even if you are allowed to submit an amended/updated PS to another uni, the original will still be there for all to see.(Original post by Skitsy)
I'm in a bit of a pickle. Long story really, but in a nutshell I can only apply to one single university because I don't have biology A Level. My 6th Form is combining with another 6th Form and the science teacher got made redundant.
This university has a course where they basically teach you the equivalent of A Level biology in the first year, and then you can jump onto the BSC degrees after the first year.
Applying to this university is the only way I can get a degree without having to take another 2 years out to do a college course.
So here's my question; I'm writing my personal statement and I know it is debatable to put the names of any universities, but I can only apply to one and it is the only one which offers this base year course.
Please help, I really don't know if I can write that -

I think it's probably OK to say that you are interested in the science behind medicine, giving your reasons why you are interested in it (I mean, that's a big part of the reason you are applying for biomedical science!). But this too:

Re: Geography and EconomicsHi - I'm not sure how your thread ended up getting marked for reviewer attention in the PS Help forum.(Original post by Jay™)
Hi, how would you go about starting a PS for this course?
I just don't know how i should start it, i know i shouldn't start with a quote, that's too generic and character wasting, but at the same time i know i need to make an impact, help!
Thanks
Jay
As the FAQ explains, we provide feedback on complete PS drafts. The place to ask general questions is the PS Questions thread, which is where I've now moved your post.
Hopefully you should get some replies here as it's a public, rather than private area of the forum.
In response to your question: Start it by telling the reader why you want to study geography + economics at degree level. It's as simple as that really. If you don't know why - or are unsure enough that expressing your desire to study this course is very difficult - then you may need to have a hard think about whether it's really the right path for you. -
Personal Statement for Joint Honours
I'm applying for Joint Honours in French and ab initio Russian, and I'm a bit lost as to how much of my statement should go for each, since I've obviously had a great deal more experience in French. At present, I've got it at about 3 paragraphs on French, one on Russian, but what kind of ratio would you guys suggest?

Re: Personal Statement for Joint Honours
I applied for a Hispanic Studies course (c'est a dire Spanish and Portuguese) and I focused mainly on Spanish, as it is the larger component, as you have with French. I think I only had one sentence about Portuguese actually, something about how cool Brazil is I think!
As Russian is ab initio for you, they obviously won't expect you to have engaged with the language in any huge way, but one paragraph should be fine, explaining your interest, how fascinated you are by learning a Cyrillic language blah blah blah.
Three paragraphs for French actually seems like quite a lot to me- I think I only had one for Spanish, and the rest was my extracurricular stuff, and also a bit about my general interest in language. <That might be a good for you to incorporate.
Oh and I got an unconditional so some of this advice must be valid =] -
Re: Personal Statement for Joint Honours
Using paragraphs as a measure is vague. How long is a paragraph? Your content for 3 paragraphs may be covered by someone else in one monster paragraph!
Ideally, about 70% of your personal statement will be on the subject you want to study, with the other 30% being on extracurricular activities. Since you are applying for joint honours it would make most sense to try to split the 70% equally between each subject. However, since you will know a lot more about French you may wish to spend slightly more on that. But it is still important to show that you know what studying Russian will be like and thus talk about your passion for doing this. you may even need to spend slightly more time talking about this as it is completely new to you and admissions tutors will need to know that you haven't just randomly chosen something from the prospectus -
Re: Personal Statement for Joint HonoursTo contradict myself a little bit, I agree with this, as you are applying for joint honours, and my course isnt joint honours at all. So I think you do need to do more of an even amount for both languages. If you can, link wanting to learn Russian with something you enjoy about French/learning French, then you can write less about Russian on its own.(Original post by Juno)
