i think you'd have to get a solid result in the first year exams and perform throughout the year, then it shouldn't be too impossible because the subjects are relatively similar. but i havn't got any specialist or internal knowledge.

I'm no expert, but I thought that at Scottish universities in your first year you study three subjects Surely if you study English in your first year, switching at the end won't be that difficult, however, I don't actually know what subject ML is so I might be completely on the wrong track.

oops sorry, Modern Languages...I thought it shouldn't be too difficult but I suppose I should ask the Uni...

i imagine it wouldn't be the easiest thing to do... as far as i'm aware, most english courses are kind of over-subscribed. but i imagine that if you got good grades and did lots of pestering, it could happen.
You can do it, just as long as you take English Literature 1 as one of your outside courses.
