Yeah, it's legal to drink on the streets in England so long as you're not being disorderly. You can buy alcohol at 3am or whenever from a 24-hour supermarket.

they do have liquor stores there.....right?
Yes but don't call it a liquor store :p:

Off-licence is better. Though they might call it something else in Scotland...

I am interested in what you'd have to say, so I quote you.

Any advice on the amount of luggage I should take??

^This is for everyone of course :o:

On s more serious note:

P.S: I know you are funding your own studies, but I still suggest you bring minimal luggage and buy the rest from here? Just makes it a whole lot easier for you while travelling

    P.S.S:

So, I spoke to my family today and considering that I am still working, it seems that I won't be leaving till the 24th of September which seems better, for me, since I would have at least a month's worth of income available to me for the days before I get my refund. It still seems like 40 dollars a day is the best estimate, and while I would LOVE to spend it socialising and trying out the pubs, I am going to have to spend wisely until I get my refund to balance my budget.

Plus, I don't see why I would need to spend those days out and about hitting the pubs when I could just go to the local liquor store and buy me a nice bottle of vodka.

they do have liquor stores there.....right?
40 dollars a day is £30 something right? You could easily get by on that if you budget and don't eat expensive foods. Clubs cost £4 on average, bars are obviously free to enter as are pubs. Supermarkets are the cheapest places to buy vodka, alcohol stores have deals on sometimes [2 for 1 etc] but try supermarkets and make sure you have ID as the drinking age is 18 over here.

I'm 25 so I don't think I'll be having any problems purchasing it.

    2 for 1? woah.

I'll see what I will do because I have to buy a new wardrobe anyway (I am from a subtropical climate) and since I am not going to have cash till my loans refund, i'd really have to make the money I am going with last. Maybe if I just buy some clothing for the first few days.

oh, and does that smiley ever work for you? :P

well it's legal to drink on the streets in england I believe but not here.. I dont just mean the streets, equally its illegal to drink in parks etc. but I agree that's hardly an issue, though you'll be suprised at how irratating the 10pm rule is..
    What 10pm rule??? :lolwut:

Oh right, yeah if you look under 25 they still have to ID you by law apparently. Yeah some supermarkets have 2 for 1 offers on cider etc.

er yes it is.. - see the 2005 scottish liscensing act if you don't believe me http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/8230074.stm, or go and try to buy some in tesco after 10pm - they won't let you..

Oh well, regulations are fine. I doubt I'd be searching to buy booze after 10pm anyway.

    I'll just stock up!

When you say drinking on the streets...I dont know if I have ever seen that allowed anywhere but considering that St Andrews is a university town with many pubs, it sounds like it conflicts a bit ( I am sure a college student or two have walked out on the street with a cup in hand at some point?)

Personally, I am not a fan of being "drunk in public" so that isn't cramping on my party.

Plus, I enjoy indoor get togethers more than anything! ^_^
FWIW you might want to try and avoid saying 'college' to mean 'university' while in the UK. Obviously over here they are two totally different things, and it could cause some confusion.

I've not known many Americans/Canadians in real life, but that has been a point of confusion with literally all of them.
