4chan illegal??

Please keep anon, posting on behalf of a friend who didn't want me to tell anyone about it.

My friend has (for no apparent reason) been targeted by people from 4chan. His entire online presence has been hacked and destroyed. They have taken photos of him and photoshopped them explicitly and put them all up over facebook, twitter, blogger, myspace, flickr, his uni website... messaged them to his friends, even his mum. He is ridiculously upset. He has deleted everything but people are still posting stuff on his uni facebook page and that, I am reporting frantically but it has been an hour and stuff still isn't being taken down. I am telling him to go to the police but he says it is not worth it. What do you think?? Will they be able to find the people/ have they committed a crime?? Thanks.

No point bothering if im honest, 4chan people know how to hide themselves so no one could prove its them, and even if they could, what would they be guilty of, they havent stolen his identity or any money, just bruise dhis dignity a bit, and so long as he is old enough im sure all the photos arent illegal either.
Its 4chan, sometimes they can be nice people, sometimes they just get bored and do this.
Why would he go to that site anyways, It's so childish.
Ahhhh, the delightful children of 4chan strike again.

God, what an idiot. I feel sympathy for the guy but 4channers are ******* immature as hell, they will have a go at you for ridiculous reasons and if your friend hasn't lurked and posted something stupid he is bound to get this kinda stuff. I wouldn't bother posting on the thread on 4chan if I were you, you'll do nothing but make things worse. You could try reporting the thread to the mods but I don't even know if they have a report function on 4chan, havent used it properly in ages. Your best bet is getting your friend to talk to everyone who has heard from 4channers, I'm sure they'll understand. Also next time, advise him to stay away from sites like 4chan. Most chans are pretty horrendous, there are a couple of decent ones but the last time I checked they were going downhill too.

Technically I think there is something illegal here but they'll never get prosecuted, international law etc

ironically they actually did some good once, a guy posted online how he wanted to rape his 13 year old niece(in-law) in detail, and posted a photo of her. The photo was her hugging a school mascot, 4chan actually got very annoyed at it, and collectively tracked down the highschool from the mascot, emailed the picture of the girl and the link to the thread, then found out the details for the original poster. :|
Just goes to show they arent creepy all the time....just 99.999999999% of the time
How the hell did they get your friends name and address or a picture of him.

P.S. That reminds me off when a lot of people on /b/ where searching for a girl who gave a false name but real picture. Basically, she made a thread on /adv/ about have bf forcing her to have sex with a dog. Then, something about her bf video taping it.

Its like the next few days people where trying to track her down.

P.P.S. They eventually found her real name and found out it was a troll post and there is no video.

It was like the most obvious troll ever.

It's 4chan there's nothing you can do except sit there and watch the internet's most deranged minds turn everything to ****.

I guess you haven't lurked there too much and btw if you still go to 4chan I seriously advise stopping, it's ridiculously childish. I did lurk for a bit 2 years ago but it gets boring and frankly it's disgusting.

It's basically an anonymous message board. If you really want to find out then go do it, it is the best way. /b/ is by far the most popular board but I wouldn't advise it, it's a disgusting, depraved, ridiculously childish and boring after a few minutes and that's an understatement.

It isn't that random, it's normally for some reason even though the person rarely deserve it. In most cases I would probably say the person who is targeted acted foolishly.

Whilst hilarious, yes, they have. Tracking them down could be more difficult, unless they're idiots and haven't used a proxy.

The first crime is harrassment, they're pretty much all guilty of that to various degrees, defamation/libel for the images and remarks, and if the images are obscene, and your friend is under 18, then sharing adult images with a minor could be levelled.
If they've photoshopped a penis or jizz or whatever onto his face, or something of that nature then *technically* it's possession/distribution of child pornography, but I'm not sure the authorities would take it that seriously.

Either way, yes, they've commited a crime. But I doubt you'll be able to track them down. May as well try.
He should have know better than to dabble in dark arts of the internet underworld that is 4Chan
