Why not just do an engineering degree? You can get into some good unis with a BTEC

Might be the answer, wanted to do a degree in economics or business but might have to look more towards the engineering route. Wanted to stop with engineering really.

edit: Yes, people may harp on about 'experience' but used here it's extremely ambiguous? At 21, how much experience do you actually have except perhaps working in M&S every Saturday? It doesn't give companies a huge amount to go on...

People who actually end up getting good graduate jobs have experience relevant to the career they're aiming for...

The kind of person who's only ever worked behind a till every Saturday are the ones you see in the 'Careers and Employment' forum whining about how university is so useless because they've applied for 500 jobs and no one wants them.
In theory yes, but in reality lol no.

A lot of it depends on the employer.

I understand that bristol and LSB have vastlky different reputations, but shouldnt a first be parallel throughout all universities?

Why would universities have different reputations if they're all the same in the end anyway?
There is no reliable way in the current higher education system to ensure parity between grades awarded at different universities.

That is all.

Good point, but the reputation could be on student achieving these grades, dropouts student to lecturer ratio's ...... not on the actually value of the final qualification.

True, but if people instinctively consider some Unis to be better than others ( "wow you're going to Oxbridge" ), it's likely those same people will be more impressed by by a first from a top uni as well.

Whether it actually takes the same amount of brains/work/dedication to achieve a first from Oxford and a first from LSB is hard to measure. On the one hand the workload and level of the material will almost certainly be higher at "better" universities, but then so will the support structure and attention given to students.
