Starcraft II (2012)Starcraft II

About:
Starcraft II is an online Real Time Strategy Game developed by Blizzard Entertainment in 2010. Set in a futuristic space setting, players can play through the campaign or compete online in a ladder system in a 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 environment. The three races; Terran (humans), Zerg (bug aliens) and Protoss (futuristic techno-species) offer vastly different play-styles and units that make Starcraft II a truly exciting game, both to the casual player and on the competitive eSports stage.
Competitive:
Starcraft II has one of the largest eSports communities of any competitive online game, competitions are hosted around the world including the GSL, Dreamhack, IGN ProLeague - to name but a few. Tournaments are streamed free online by major commentators in the community, funded by adverts on the streamer's site. Blizzard's official website for Starcraft lists upcoming tournaments, and following major 'casters' such as Totalbiscuit, Day[9], HuskyStarcraft, dApollo, Tasteless, Artosis will also keep you up-to-date with the competitive scene.
Casual viewing:
Due to the watchability of Starcraft, some would argue that players spend more time watching Starcraft II than playing it! Websites where any players, from professionals to utter newbies, can be found easily online. Additionally, many pros and 'casters have regular shows where they stream content online, and then upload it to their youtube channels. The most popular beginner-friendly streams/youtube channels are Day[9] and Totalbiscuit. More streaming content can be found on the TeamLiquid website (streams are listed on the right-hand side under the calendar)
Starcraft II Society
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/group.php?groupid=1792
I've made this society and thread to 'refresh' the Starcraft conversations on TSR - seeing as the only thread still going is one that was made when the game launched!
It gives us an opportunity to find people still playing and discuss tactics without having to sift through the ton of old posts way-back-when!
If anyone wants, PM or post your RealID, Code Number, League & the type of match you're interested in most and I'll list you below. Might make it easier for people to find practice partners, if you would like it?
I'll kick it off with mine (don't hate my league!)
Player List:
Spoiler:ShowArchitecture-er
RealID: Fyreblade
No. #294
League: Silver 1v1 - Looking for people to practice general strategy against, especially vs. Zerg!
Lubo
RealID: lubo
No. #156
League: Gold/Plat - Looking for someone to practice 1v1, or 2v2 with. Experienced with Terran / Protoss.

The Starcraft 2 Megathread

Very suprised that no ones already created a thread on this yet. I guess your all busy playing the game first?
As a complete noob to Starcraft I have to say that I've found the two skirmishes I've played so far very hard - trounced by the computer on both occasions. I've never been that great at RTS games but I was pretty suprised at how delicate my units were and how quickly the AI attacked me. Hopefully I'll soon improve, but I'm pretty glad I didn't jump in at the deep end and try multiplayer to begin with, as usually is the case.
I should probably play the Campaign aswell, but I never really play strategy games for that - its going to have to be very good to be the exception.
Anyway what are everyone else's first impressions? I find it always takes a while to really start enjoying an RTS game, but would be interesting to hear everyone's thoughts so far.Last edited by Loco_J; 27-07-2010 at 17:29. -
Re: The Starcraft 2 Megathread
Yep, I agree the guy does look like a clot.
What if his visor just slotted down? Then his whole helmet will be filled with fumes.
On another note, I am a Starcraft noob I have to admit. Never played any Starcraft games. However I am very good at Warcraft 3 and can micro well. The balance will be much different in SC2 anyway. But from what I can gather from the beta, it is positive. The game is more noob-friendly than ever. Still, we will get squashed if we battle some South Koreans, I have to say. But at least there are positives to be heard. -

Re: The Starcraft 2 MegathreadThere's a Starcraft Society somewhere in here. I turned down the application for it to be an official society a few months ago due to the thread being, well, a little bit dead.(Original post by Loco_J)

Re: The Starcraft 2 MegathreadThe visor/screen is down you muppet...why do you think the smoke is wafting away into the wind, for?(Original post by Fugeh)
I can't help but think that the guy smoking a cigar in his helmet is a bit stupid.
I didn't even realise that it was out, been a bit out of the loop recently. Although im not sure that my laptop would run it anyway...

Re: The Starcraft 2 Megathread
Ahhhh, I want to play this game so bad but I don't think I have a decent enough computer. I can run WC3 fine with these specs on medium:
AMD athlon 64 Clawhammer 2.6GHz
1GB RAM
Nvidia 6600 LE
I'll be pushing it I reckon with SC2.
Btw guys, how is this game compared to WC3? -

Re: The Starcraft 2 Megathread
Purchased the game as soon as it came out on digital download. Pre-downloaded couple days before, installed and running in under 10mins.
Decent game haven't tried multi-player yet, been playing single player/campaign and unlocking the achievements.
Can't seem to beat very hard AI consistently as I know hardly anything about other races (only using terrans atm) so scouting is useless until I know the stuff.
i hope my uni grades dont suffer come september : D
