Arc and anth at Cambridge

Does anybody have any general information upon this course for a prospective udnergraduate?

Has anyone applied or indeed been accepted for this course or have any knowledge of the interview for it or what sorts of things I could be reading up on? I'm doin Archaeology for AS level at the moment and would like to know what the course entails if anyone has any information/ I've checked out the prospectus but didn't find much interest there so does anybody know if you have oyour own scope to look at particular areas within social anthropology (my main interest). I love literature and art and im unsure of just how science based this course is. any help?

There is a huge scope to specialise incl. within social anthropology (which I am intending to specialise in myself.) Specialisation begins in the 2nd year when one of the 3 or 4 subjects (if opted for political theory as well) is taken up alone. Then in the third yr specialisation is complete and you take an area of your chosen subject such as gender and identity to look at in detail.

I was also concerned about the science based part of the course. It involves some fairly scary genetics but with a little work even a "gave it up after GSCE science phobe" type like myself found it interesting and very useful for other areas of the course. There are also sections in bio anth on primates and evolution so even if you're terrible at genetics, all is not lost.

This is a very wide course - be ready for philosophy, economics, politics, ethnology, genetics, paleontology and much more! My advice if concerned about bio anth is to read Matt Ridley any from "Genome" "The red queen" and "Nature via Nurture" (a really good one to have read before interview.)

Feel free to pm me with any further questions.

Got an offer (AAA) for Arch & Anth at Newnham for 2004, how much field work is organised through the college/uni & how much are you expected to find for yourself? I'm quite into the science side of archaeology (doing chem, biol, geog & hist A2s) is there much opportunity to go really sciencey into it? (any idea how it can compare to say a BSc course?-my insurance is BSc Arch sciences at Sheffield...) Do you still have to be able to identify pretty much any bone in certain animals? (me & my wish to compete on this one, shes doing medicince so claims to be able to name all human bones...I want to take it further & beat her!)
