Two questions....

Basically, my predicted grades aren't looking amazing, mainly because I was arrogant and lazy last year. I'm paying the price now, I guess. Anyway, I want to do History at uni, and am currently doing Alevel English Lit, History and Philosophy.

I'm not really sure if it's worth applying to UCL, KCL, and the "better" uni's with the grades I have predicted. Your opinions would be welcome and appreciated.

Also, I was looking at other universities such as Brookes, and they seem to have a requirement of BBC or BCC, which I know I could get...although, their course doesn't really have anything on medieval/early modern history.

Could anyone recommend a course with a fair bit of medieval/early modern content?

Thanks for looking.

Are you in upper or lower sixth? Don't worry about predicted grades, it's what you actually get first time round for your AS level that matters...and even then if you have a really good personal statement it can help. I got a B first time round in History, which knocked out my top 2 (Cambridge and Durham), but Bristol, Sheffield and Warwick still gave me an offer (although Warwick's was a changed course). York rejected me but I didn't like the campus anyway so it was my last choice :p:
The key is to retake modules to improve grades
If you're really not feeling confident, put one or two of your top choices down and fill the other 4 spaces with less good unis...if you think you can work hard enough this year to get good grades at AS (if you're in lower sixth) I'd apply for three good unis and three worse. Speak to your history and careers teachers (and any other teachers involved), and don't aim low if it's not necessary. Also don't aim so high you have no offers...have at least one uni whose grades you know you can achieve.

No medieval history courses spring to mind, sorry.

Royal Holloway definitely does medieval history, as I know very well - I'm going into the third-year there, and specialise in medieval history. Definitely recommended.
Swansea has a lot of medieval and early modern modules on offer as well.

exeter possibly and edinburgh definately but edinburgh take BBB x

Keele do european and medieval - take a look at them, great university and usually 260 UCAS points wise, so an easy target

Thank you for your advice, it's much appreciated. I'll look into Keele, Exeter and Swansea.

I'm in upper sixth so basically just finalising UCAS stuff and hoping to send it all off mid-October/early November.

Ah, so it does! I've given that a look and probably will apply there..

So far I'm thinking:
UCL
Oxford Brookes
Queen Mary
*St Mary's
*Nottingham Trent

(* denotes possibly...)

Any more ideas are welcome.

Does Swansea not attract you after all then? It has a better reputation than any of the universities in your list above, apart from UCL!

What's wrong with History at RHUL? It's very reputable (joint 11th in the country, according to the Times), and is a warm, friendly department, with plenty of medieval and early modern options for those who aren't great fans of modern history!

SOAS, if you would like a breath of fresh air from the traditional courses all around the country. Plus the SOAS library - unmatchable in its area. I'd go as far as saying that it is the biggest and best library on Africa and Asia in Western Europe.
Manchester do Medieval Hist

Thanks for the responce. My list is currently looking like so:

UCL
Queen Mary
Oxford Brookes
*Nottingham/Trent
*Swansea
*Southampton
*RHUL

Still looking and confirming though... God, it's really a nightmare picking, especially when you're incredibly indecisive like myself.

If you're going on reputation (particularly for History), I'd say RHUL and Southampton are better than QMUL and Oxford Brookes...though I agree that UCL is definitely the best!

The problem I have is poor predicted grades (ie, BBC). I mean, I've had a look and chosen courses based on the assumption I'll get a BBB (I may get better, but I'm not going to risk applying for all AAA unis...)

So far it's looking like, in no particular order:
UCL
Queen Mary
RHUL
Goldsmiths
Oxford Brookes

One more... :x

Ah, ok then. I'd recommend Swansea for your other choice, its History Department has a pretty good reputation as far as I know... *waits for HistoryStudent to back that point up*

Also - it just occured to me, have you considered Reading at all? They do medieval and early modern history.

Edit: I forgot to say, BBC isn't poor!

Swansea didn't appeal to me much to be honest... although I ended up sticking down Reading

Thanks for your advice, everyone. Much appreciated.
