The Student Room Group

advice deadly needed. i hate the sqa.

right, results day yesterday and i got a "no award" for higher history because apparantaly: "you entered for the National courses listed below but you have not attained grades A-D in the external assessment." meaning my extended essay of which my school told me was a A piece and i recieved a formal A prediction for. i also got a high A in my prelim and an A in almost every class essay.

i phoned my school and have been informed they will put in an appeal for me which will most likely get me a D or a C. i feel this is unjust because my school marked my extended essay under a criterion and gave it an A and surely the SQA markers have the same criterion and it is just ridiculous that it could be such a lower mark.

is it a mistake on their part?

Sounds like you'll just have to go through the appeal process then see what you get then argue your case? Has this stopped you from meeting your uni requirements?

How did you feel after the examination?I mean maybe you didnt aswer the questions properly?

Also it could be a clerical error; they could be giving you someone elses grade, there have been cases of that happening in the past.

Also im not sure how it works with the SQA but are Appeals anything like Remarks?
I know that during my AS-Levels we had a lot of History and English students put their papers in for remarks and a fair few went up one( or even two) grade boundaries. This is because theyre both really subjective subjects so it depends a lot on the examiner you get.

i waltzed out of the exam :frown: it was easy, good questions came up and i wrote good essays and paper 2 was fine ::frown::frown::frown::frown::9 arghagrh its so annoying.

i hope it is a clerical error, how would i find this out? i have been told that the sqa are too busy and probably wont look over my essay again but i honestly think theyve made a mistake; or otherwise my school has a terrible marking system that gave an E piece and A.

You kowwhat question you're doing before the exam so doubt it
It could be that the SQA has recently updated their marking scheme and your school hasn't caught up with it, so they marked your essay using different criteria. It might be worth checking this aspect, sometimes schools don't realise that changes have been made to the courses.

Other than that, it sounds like you are in a very good situation for appealing - it seems like there's a lot of evidence that you're capable of a good grade, so hopefully that will help. I hope it works out ok

thats true! thats plausible because its so unreal that an A could be an E using the same criteria! i will definately enquire about that.
im gonna write a letter to tell them how crap their system is.
thanks for the advice

You can't get your paper remarked in Scotland by the SQA.

OP, if you appeal I can't see you getting any better than a C, it's possible it could be an error but that's very rare. I'd talk to your teacher (if you can) and/or phone the wee SQA helpline number. :mmm: Hope it works out.
what don't you just go and blow the sqa hq up?
It could be possible you can get upgraded to an A though, last year a boy in our school got straight As on his essays and close readings for his Int 2 English and even in his Prelim recieved and A.

His results arrvied in the post showing he got a D in his exam, but he got his appeal and was upgraded to an A. Its not really a good way they only use one marker to judge the essay because differnt markers see different things as good, like in our school an English teacher love it when people use the word "portrays" in their essay and looks more kindly on it, another English teacher in the same school hates the words and harshly marks the essay.

You should get your appleal in the end since you have all the evidence to back it up, best of luck.

Interesting thread! There is not one person that I know who sat higher history has got anything other than a no award - and I'm talking about 18 out of one particular school, four from my college. I only found this out at work about 4pm today and was unable to call my college.

I wonder if it's anything to do with the fact that SQA changed the amount of words you were able to use for your extended essay - remember the amount was changed from 200 to 150 right about the time everyone was doing their essays, I think before easter.

I'm certainly going to call my college on Monday about this - I posted a thread about this on the day the results came out so I'm very interested to hear what you are saying.

I got an A....
And the other from 200 to 150? That was for intermediate 2 not higher

no 200 to 150 was changed just before Easter - my tutor came in with the letter to the class. I didn't do my extended essay until after easter.

I'm just intrigued that there is someone in a very similar situation to myself and my fellow students. I can't speak for the school, I only found that out today, but I know that I came out of that exam sure that I'd done really well, as the poster seems to have felt as well.

Just appeal, there can sometimes be anomalies like this. At my school 10 people in a row got a C, D or No Award in Higher Modern Studies, and when the Head of Dept looked into it they were in alphabetical order by surname. Apparently Higher Modern Studies essays are actually marked in 10s and are allocated alphabetically by surname, so it was a rogue marker somewhere. They were all appealed to either an A or B.

The Extended Essay should be based on an issue of the candidate's own choice drawn from any of the above contexts. Submissions on areas outwith the syllabus will be penalised. It is recommended that candidates devote eight hours (or two weeks' class time) to the researching of the issue, prior to their preparation of an outline plan of not more than 200 words (dates count as words). Breaches of the word limit, or the absence of a plan, or attempts to circumvent the word count by use of codes or abbreviations will be penalised by up to 10 marks.

I just took this off the SQA website. W had an discussion about this a few months back and it ws concluded that many teachers wrongly thought the higher extended essay plan had been reduced- and your tutor is obviouisly one of them.
Look, as someone said anomalies do occur, so if you are in any doubt, just appeal. Just to be clear i'm not trying to put you guys down or anything, just give you the facts.

Thanks for that Craigour, it's anomolies like this that I want to know about - I'm a very mature student and I'm over-suspicious! I got a C in my weakest subject, and nothing in my strongest, hence that's why I am intrigued by the marking system, of which I know nothing about.

Oh to have had the luxury of eight hours to research the specialist essay, I think we got about 10 mins worth of class time on it!
