how to reference a reference?
in the book im using, the author frequently references other authors. If im referencing something from the book where the authors referenced somebody else, which do i reference?
will I say something like, author 2 cited in author 1s book did what ever?
at the end do i put both in the references list?

Are you using the Harvard system?
Use the name of whoever the author is referencing within your essay.
In the bibliography:
Author of original work's surname, initials. (Date of original publication), Title of original work, Place of publication: Publisher, cited in Author/editor surname, initials. (Date), Title, Place of publication: publisher.
