Re: Unless scientists discover immortality, the Earth will not be saved.
I'd say almost the opposite of your idea would be most likely to help. Instead of massively increasing the earth's population until everything is completely gone do you not think it would be better to have a smaller population which the earth can handle?
I understand what you are saying about the selfishness but I am not sure I agree. Even if people are inherently selfish that doesn't mean we can't do things for other people. Some people die for others, some do charity what's to say we can't think about the future of our planet.
Besides, what we are doing to our planet is upsetting right now. Seeing what we have done to nature bothers me and lots of other people. -
Re: Unless scientists discover immortality, the Earth will not be saved. If you're interested I'm pretty confident the information revolution will throw up immortality somewhere, and then because it will also create a technological divide between the haves and the have-nots there will be a small number of humans (and the more powerful/influential humans) who are immortal while everyone else will die off.(Original post by The-Real-One)
OK, I'm no veg munching, long haired, eco hippy. I do believe as a matter of fact that we will eventually wreck the Earth's ecosystem and environment. But I just don't believe we could stop it, or even that we should.
Unless scientists give us all immortality, we are obviously going to die in x number of years. It's very rational for us to want a high standard of living when we're alive. I'd want to make as much money as possible from wrecking the planet before I die. I wouldn't give a **** if the planet 100 yrs after me becomes uninhabitable.
However, if I was going to be immortal, it would be in my best interests to make sure I have a comfortable but sustainable living on the planet.
There is a thought in moral philosophy, "X is bad if and only if X is bad for someone". Unsustainable living is actually GOOD for everyone alive today. It could only be BAD for someone very later, unborn today, so really, they don't count. They're no one. And if they are born 200 yrs later into a toxic wasteland, it's not our fault today; its their parents' inability to keep their legs shut.
This will all happen within our lifetimes, so no doubt you will be immortal.
